I just want start by letting you know what a great site you have here. I been lurking awhile here and have had many of my questions answered already (and I few I didn't know I had until I got here).

I have a model 28 highway patrolman and have had difficulty lately with the rear site adjustment. It seems every time I pull the gun out I need to site it in again. I've noticed now the site just wont remain tight. Rather than ordering a replacement site I was thinking about scoping it instead. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions. I don't have any experience with red dot scopes I've only dealt with scopes on my long guns. Any advice you could give would be great.

Thanks

TD,
My S&W M28 Highway Patrolman was NOT drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Are you willing to have that done? If so, you can "maybe" buy a suitable pistol scope mount (i.e., Leupold) and have your gun drilled to fit. CHECK FIRST to be sure the mount is compatible with the S&W M28 frame and take/leave the mount with gunsmith to use when drilling the gun. After drilling/tapping/fitting scope mount, a Leupold 2X EER scope makes an excellent pistol scope. Have used four of them on my (.22 LR and .44 Mag) pistols for the last 17+ years with no problems.

Good shooting and be safe.

ps: More than 2X on pistol scope produced VERY narrow field of view and greatly magnified tremors/shakes. My advice is to stick with simple 2X on pistol scope. You also need Extended Eye Relief (EER) pistol scope and NOT a typical rifle scope. YMMV.

Thanks LB,

I don't think I'll need any Smithing I should be able to remove the rear sight and add the scope mount.

The weigland base you posted the link to will work on those revolvers that have been drilled and tapped for bases.........I have several of this same base on various S&Ws...They are great bases.

Open the cylinder, look at the bottom of the top strap. If three screws are visible, it has been drilled and tapped, if not, it will have to be drilled and tapped to use tha base your link leads too.

I have a Weigand base on my 28-2, with a S&W red dot.

The top strap must be drilled and tapped. C&S charged me around $35 to do mine.

Makes for a much easier gun to shoot with my old eyes.

Thanks Joe,

Great info AND a look at my future. Nice pic, I'll post mine when she's finished.

Tackdriver,

I found this thread kinda late, but here is my 686 with the Weigand base. I have a Tasco PDP3 red dot. IMHO, there is alot of bang for your buck in these bases! I paid about $30 brand new for mine...that website you listed seems quite high!

Bsquare makes a no tap and drill scope mount for S&W revolvers. It replaces the rear sight base and uses the screwhole in the front and a drilled plate that fits in the recess for the rear sight. I bought a model 17-5 that had one on it along with a 1x burris scope. It seems really solid but I'm not sure how well it handles magnum recoil. Midway USA carries them or at least they used to.
