My shop has a S&W model 457 compact 45. It's two tone, black over silver. The pistol is LNIB, with two mags, and appears not to have been carried or shot much.

The 457 is very light, and the grip fits my hands well. Does anyone have experience with the 457? The shop owner says the two tone is a rare model. Is this true? What value would you put on this model? I'm wanting a compact 45 for CCW, and am not enamored of compact 1911's. Thanks TJ.
 
Sleeper of a .45. Pretty nice little handgun. I've got the all black model. Always thought the all steel 45xx series were just a tad too heavy but excellent shooters.

I've never seen a two tone. Just the black 457 and the silver 457s.

I like mine. It shoots well. Reliable. I could gripe about the trigger not being a single action 1911 style, or the safety being in the wrong place and going the wrong way, but who cares? Master the trigger, learn the safety, enjoy the little thing. It's not really that little but it's not really that big... it may be just right.
 
When I was commanding a couple of drug task forces I carried a 645 as my primary and a 457 as backup. When I left that assignment I still carried my 457 as primary. As BabaLouie said they are a sleeper. Mine has been 100% reliable. If feeds anything and is plenty accurate enough.
I've seen a couple of 2 tone. One of our SWAT guys carried a 2 tone as backup. I don't know the model designation for 2 tone.
 
Excellent. I carried mine alot. Shot it a fair amount. I think they're the best value of the value line. Can't recall any malfunctions.

Never seen a 2 tone, but it's always possible. S&W occasionally messes with the market by putting out uncatalogued models or variations. Puts a bit of uncertainty in the collector's market. I suppose S&W could probably tell you for sure or maybe if you can get ahold of Jim Supica, he might know (occasionally posts at www.smith-wessonforum.com).
 
Asking $425. I think I will get this two tone 457, the reviews online have been consistantly good. The fellows on the S&W forum appear to like the 457 too. TJ
 
Two Tone 457

Yes it is for real, I have owned several 457s including a two tone, but they are not current production, came out several years ago. 457's are a sleeper, I am much happier with the ss versions than the blue, dead nuts reliable and I really like how flat they are. Will use 4506 8 rd mags for back up. Price you quote is not bad at all. Only thing I didn't like was the plastic sights, which is not to say they were not functional, I just didn't like the plastic. Mine were all very accurate, and only sold when I had to move overseas, one was traded up for a CQB (4563). I think you'll like it. JIT slide is nice holster for it.

My brother bought a 457S a couple of years ago. He uses it for CCW . I've never fired it, but he tells me it's been 100%. I believe the 457 has been discontinued, so if you like it, you should probably jump on it. BTW, I think the 457 is the budget version of the 4516. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, kinda, sorta. It's actually closer to the budget version of the 4513. The 4516 was all stainless. I have one. Heavy gun. The 4513 was an aluminum framed version of the 4516. But, as far as I know, the 4513 was only made as a TSW gun. First, the non-railed version that took a special 6 round magazine (due to a shortened grip with a special cutout), then the more current 7 round version that is very similar to the 457 and uses 4516 and 457 mags.
 
Well I purchased it. I lubed it, and went to the indoor range at lunch. I fired 200 rounds of Winchester 230 grain from Walmart. The pistol functioned flawlessly. Accuracy was very good for a first outing, and I feel this little 45 is probably more accurate than I am capable.

The shop owner sold me a G&G holster for a 4516, and the 457 fits it very snug. I have always been a revolver guy, with the exception of a brief dalliance with 1911's, courtesy of Uncle Sugar. This 457 will be my primary carry, after my next range session to assure reliability. It is an excellent CCW and personal defense handgun IMO.

Just bought one with matte finish. I'm a revolver guy but my son in law is looking for a .45 semi- he wants a Glock, but the price on the Smith was right. Went to range today and it shoots without a hitch, 4" groups at 7 yards which is about the best I can do with anything.

Told son in law he can have it for what I paid. Almost hope he dosen't want it. Be a great truck gun.

I have put hundreds of rounds through it. It swallows anything you put in it, fmj, hp, and any weight. The only gripe I have is it is heavy, alloy frame with a stainless slide. The only mod I have made is a good set of Houge grips. I hate the plastic grips that come on S&Ws. Oh and if you are going to carry it it is touch and go finding holsters for it.

Are you sure you have a 4516? I looked at the picture and it does look like an alloy frame as you described, but the 4516s all had stainless steel frames. Alloy framed version of the 4516 was the 4513. I think CDNN has some of these in TSW format right now. I have both the 457 and the 4516. Quite a bit of difference in recoil, but I don't find the 457 hard to manage.

Leather is out there. Generally anything that fits the 4516 should be good to go for the 457. I would caution against trying to fit a 457 into a kydex or molded plastic holster. There are slight dimensional differences in the slide of the 457. Not enough to make it a hassle with leather but a problem with plastic.

I agree with the Hogue rubber grips. Nearly all my 3rd Gen S&W wear them (exception is the 6906 and the 4013TSW that only had wraparounds).
