I have a Smith model 639. It is stainless except for the rear sight which is blued. All the descriptions and pictures I have seen of this model has ears around the rear sight and it is adjustable for windage. This one looks like it is only adjustable if it is hit with a drift, but I am not sure of that. Also, the slide does look like it any place for these protective ears to be mounted.
Is this normal for this pistol?

This is the adjustable sight version 639.

The protective "ears" are 3 sided stamped metal paiece, held on by the rear sight.

S&W also made a fixed sight version that would only be dift adjustable.

Nice gun...

The Second Generation series of 9mm S&W pistols.

The Gen II single column magazine versions began with - -
Model 439 - - Alloy frame, steel slide in blue or nickel.

539 - - Steel frame, steel slide, blue or nickel

639 - - Stainless steel frame and slide

All three of these models were offered with either fixed or adjustable rear sights, the latter with the protective "wings." Some of the first used the same windage-adjustable sight as the M39-2, and some with a sight that was drift adjustable only.

The compact verrsion of the single stack 9mm didn't arrive until the third Generation, with the 3913, which also had the non-adjustable rear sight.

Sources: some from memory, and some verified by Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

Best,
Johnny

Thanks for the answers. Couldn't find anthing on a fixed sight version. Mine looks just like the picture except for the sight and the ambi safety. Great gun and accurate. Bought it to replace a 39 I traded in for something else. Heavy as heck, as always I should have kept what I started with.

I picked up this 439 at the gunshow this weekend.

It has the 'ears' around the sight, I don't think it is something you can add to a gun that doesn't come with them. There is an entire 1" section of the slide completely milled away flat where the 'ears' sit. The U-shaped metal piece is held tight with a hex screw, and then the adjustable rear sight sits in between the ears.
