Ok, totally new to revolvers. I am looking at getting a snubbie for the wife and I. My local shop has these 3 models for the same price, S&W 637, 638 and 642. I know there is a love fest here for the 642. Is it that one has a spurred hammer, the other a shrouded hammer and the last is DAO, and which, though I think the 642 is shrouded hammer? They are asking $380.

They also had a Taurus 85 for 279. 100 bucks less worth it?

thx in advance.

The 642 has a completely enclosed hammer - you may hear it called "hammerless" - which makes it DAO because you cannot access the hammer to thumb cock it.

If they're asking $ 380 for a NIB 642, I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough !!

637=exposed hammer / 638=shrouded hammer

thanks, I thought it was just the differences in hammer style. I'm impressed with them, the trigger was pretty decent for a DAO. I image it's the preffered one for CCW. I was contemplating either the shrouded hammer or hammer though, any other benefits to those over the 642?

So that's a good price? I might have to take the plunge then.
