I realize that fencing has about as much to do with reality as does the javelin toss, but I think that kudos should be given to the 2 American women who score gold and bronze medals yesterday in fencing events. Apparently it has been 100 years since American women have medaled in these events. Good work, and I wouldnt reach across the table in front of either one of them.

Indeed. It's still a martial art, and it takes a lot of skill and practice to get good at it. My 14 y.o. niece is into fencing, and I wouldn't want to pi$$ her off when she has a foil in hand (or a knife, for that matter). . . . she's blindingly fast :D

Local Girl Makes Good!:D

Mariel Zagunis is from Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. Cool sidenote: I work with her uncle. He's probably on cloud nine right now!

American women have never before taken an olympic medal in fencing. Last man to do it was Peter Westbrook in 1984 in sabre.

This is the first year that women's sabre has been an offical Olympic event. I was one of those Sabrebabes about 10 years ago. Had it been an Olympic event then...I'd have given that medal thing a try.
