Saiga .223 and Galil mags?

Greetings all. I went to a local shop to check out some milsurps and ended up bringing home a .223 Saiga. I have heard these rifles can utilize Galil mags. This is good, because new Orlites are ten bucks apiece. I realize a bullet guide needs to be installed in the rifle. What is the "hot ticket" as far as bullet guides? Are there any mods needed to the Galil mags? Any real world feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think this might be my first post here. Been around for awhile, but usually just for information. If you are going to do any mods to your Saiga there is a place you need to go. I go there frequently and they have all the info you need. You will need to be 922R compliant when you use full capacity mags in your Saiga. For all you Saiga needs and desires go here:

what he said. or you can dremel the mags, and not add a bullet guide. your choice. the bullet guide will let you use both converted and nonconverted mags, though. And yes, make sure you replace is it 9 or 10(?) parts, so that the law will likey, if you use high cap mags in it.
heck , the mag alone counts for 4 parts, doesn't it?

There are a couple of guys on the Saiga forum that'll set you up with a bullet guide for a Saiga. Last I looked, they were up to rev 2.0 on the 7.62x39 bullet guides but were still working out the kinks on the 223 bullet guides. Expect to pay about $25 for the kit when it's ready.

Those that have converted Saigas tend to prefer the waffle Bulgarian mags and not the Galil mags. They mumble something to do with the rear locking tab being in a slightly different spot on the Galils than on the Bulgie or East German mags.....

Thanks for the replies fella's. I like the Galil mags because they are less than half the cost of the Bulgies. What is the least expensive way to gain 922r compliance with this Saiga? I really have no plans to convert it to pistol grip configuration, but if that's the least expensive route to take I will take it.

Basically I paid 250.00 for the weapon, and don't want to invest much more than another hundred or hundred and fifty or so to get it race ready. Thanks again.

yeah, you can do it for another 100 proly. you can go like , front site post, piston, piston cover, rear site, stock, front stock, pistol grip, trigger group, etc. but i would go over to the saiga site and check out. I think that the mags will be 4 parts by themselves. but am not 100 percent sure.

You don't have to replace 10 parts, you just can't leave 10 foreign parts on the gun. I believe on the Saiga you have to replace something like 5-6 parts. Anyway, go visit Saiga-12.com for the strait dope.

Well, after spending some time on the saiga forums, most of my questions have been answered. It seems like the Galil mags get mixed reviews compared to the Bulgies and Wiegers. Still, it would only be a ten dollar gamble to try one. Has anyone used one of Dinzag's bullet guides?
