I just reveived my new .308 and have two questions about the rifle:
1. On the right side of the rear sight is a lever. It's tight, so I didn't want to jack around with it, but what's it do?
2. I also received, along with a cleaning rod, a little "pillbox" with several things in it. The bore brush and patch holder are obvious, but what is the blade with the fork on the end for? and, are there any other uses for the pillbox that I should know.
The manual that came with it is really pretty useless by the way, especially for someone completely new to the world of AK's.
Can't wait to shoot it. I've stripped and cleaned it 3 times now...yeah, a little anxious. Ordered the POSP 6x24 from East Wind yesterday and the RAA skeletonized stock and 2 15 round Surefires from Mississippi Valley Arms as well. (got a laser bore site from Bushnell for fun)
Thanks in advance and I'll post a range report soon as I get her out. I'll also let you know if the Bushnell Laser boresite was worth the $39.00 I paid for it.

Lever would be the safety

I don't think so. The small lever below the rear sight is to release the gas tube for cleaning.

I don't recognize the "fork" thing you are talking about, but often the AK cleaning kit has a small tool to clean carbon from the gas port, might be a variation on one of these, if the "fork" is cylindrical, could be a front sight elevation adjustment tool.

The "pillbox" will have a slot cut in its side. The lip on the lever on the right side of the rear sight fits in it. It will give you leverage to lift the lever so the gas tube may be removed for cleaning. To clean the gas tube get a 12ga shotgun brush, wrap it with a solvent soaked big patch and work it back and forth a few times, then send a few dry patches down it and it will be clean enough.

The blade with the fork in it is a srcrewdriver/sight adjusting tool.
The fork end is for adjusting the sight up and down by turning it like a screw, and the flat end is just a screwdriver.

you can slide it into one of the slots on the cleaning kit case to get more leverage.

...'snif' a tear... all my boys here are all so right! ...something in my Eley, I mean
eye...

unless well broken in, that little lever can be double tough to move.
also, when you get it fully verticle, make sure you watch not only what side of the tube you take out, is facing back into the rifle, but which way is pointing up and down, and which way the spring washer is facing. it will fall off, and you will try and turn the tube upside down.

Thanks all. Nalioth, that site told the whole story about the "pillbox"...thanks.
Thanks for the info on the gas tube as well.
Time to start playing again....
