San Diego County, CA CCL?

Howdy folks. If this is in the wrong place, I do apologize. Upon the request of Uncle Sam, I was chosen to live in San Diego County (Camp Pendleton). Now from what I've heard, it's next to impossible to get a CCL unless you are a LEO or a retired LEO. Does anyone here live in SD County and have a CA CCL? How many hoops did you have to jump through to get it? Do you have any reccomendations to help me get one (PLEASE don't tell me to move to anther county)?

Well you are right, its darn near impossible, the sherrif of SD is not very kindly about private citizens owning firearms, try calguns.net for more info.

If you make your residence in San Clemente, you will be in Orange County. Orange County is rated way higher on issuing than San Diego or L.A.

You will enjoy Camp Pendleton, it has some 'exclusive beach access' - you occasionally dodge LCACs and amphib vehicles, but it really has some nice beaches.

I used to live in Vista, east of Oceanside. I had a CCW when I was there. I got it under Sheriff Duffy. You really don’t have much of a chance with the sheriff that is in power now. Depending on what part of Camp Pendleton you are on, if you could live in San Climente you would have a good chance. San Climente is in Orange county and the sheriff there is pro CCW.

I have not tried to complete an application for a CCW in SD, mostly since I'd rather not have a 'denied' on my record.

It boils down to the "good cause" issue. Things considered "good causes" by the sheriff's dept. would be:
1. You are a high profile (read: rich celebrity) person who could be assasinated.
2. You are in a high profile job: doctor, lawyer, judge, etc.
3. You routinely carry around large amount of money or jewels.
4. You can prove that it is likely you will be assaulted by an individual, or have been assaulted by them before and they're still around.

Of course, none of these rules apply to LEOs (which is reasonable) or criminal justice employees (they leave the definition of criminal justice employee rather ambiguous).

In my experience I have known two people who have applied for CCW. First, a gentleman who has a business trading rare and gold coins, and regularly carries upward of 100k worth of such things on his person to trade shows, was turned down because he didn't carry diamonds as well. Second, a friend who was put in the hospital by her estranged husband one night, after leaving messages on her phone that he was going to kill her and their children. She couldn't "prove" that he was still a threat to her, although he was now fleeing a warrant. Apparantly the sheriff's office thought her restraining order should do it.

Even if you are a celebrity who walks around with a briefcase full of diamonds, you're still going to have to drop everything you're doing to come in for at least one interview (my gentleman friend had to go to three) scheduled by their department, between the hours of 10:00 - 3:00, M-F. You can't miss it or ask to reschedule. They MAY (this is dated information) ask you to come in for a shooting test with your weapon. My friend was given 2 hours notice, so he had to have his firearm with him at all time, drop everything at work when the notice arrived, and made it to the range 25 miles away all frazzled with minutes to spare.

They say you can call for more information, but I had not much luck with it.

Anyhow, there is an absolutely fanstastic Irish pub about 15 minutes south of Pendleton in Carlsbad if you like the sort, and I wouldn't miss the Zoo or Wild Animal Park while you're stationed here.

Slim to none unless you are a former or active LEO I was at
your home back in January during Expo West. After 50 years
absence and Boot at MCRD during that time period, every citizen it now
appears needs a CCW. In this state, a clean record and a handgun
safety class will get you one in any county!!! Oregon does good

Not purchase - generally only agencies can manage that - but it is possible to get a permit to bring in one (several) you already legally own out of state. Don't know about standard capacity mags; 10 rounds or fewer is the limit these days.

You'd have a better chance begging your CO to get you sent to a new duty station.

Seriously, if you dont have a compelling reason to get a permit in SD County, you should probably just drop the issue now. The requirements for getting a permit arent so tough in CA, it's the "good cause" thing that kills it for us. Self-Defense alone is not going to suffice.

My friends tell me that its illegal to carry certain types, shapes, and sizes of knives out in CA, but the laws are so muddled and unclear that no one (even LEOs) can really be sure if that knife you carry is legal or a serious felony. Anyone know if that's true?

I am moving from NY (not the city) to CA and surprisingly it's easier to buy a hand gun in CA! NY state require a permit just to OWN a pistol and another to CCW. On all other fronts such as "assault weapons" NY seems to be slightly better.

It's legal to carry a folding knife concealed or out in the open.

A fixed blade knife cannot be concealed and needs to be carried openly.

Crazed SS and Young Gun: Interestingly, (since I brough up knives in Cali), here in FL, the CCW is a "concealed weapon and firearm license." You can carry tasers, switchblades, guns, just about anything that is concealed.
