[Reposted from KimDuToit.com's Nation of Riflemen forum, of which I'm also a member. Eugene is an individual who lives in my area, who I met through the NoR forum and who I've been encouraging to come here.]

Be afraid, Dianne Feinstein, be very afraid.

Myself (in the Green shirt with the SKS) and Eugene (with the Garand, obviously), and a few others (the big guy in the blue shirt was a new shooter and had a blast). I'm terrible with names, but I know Pouchy was there but can't associate the name with the face. We're all at the rifle range at the Chabot Gun Club in the Oakland Hills just east of San Francisco.

I recently had foot surgery, so you can see the blue post-surgical bootie underneath the guy in the blue shirt. Due to my inability to walk long distances, I managed to coerce Eugene and others to place my target and whatnot. I proceeded to limp about, showing some of the new shooters (not pictured, see below) how to safely operate the various weapons we brougt. Although only 22, I believe that being a Curmudgeonly Old Bastard(tm) would definitely be in my future, and I would highly enjoy it.

Lots of pictures are available here, most with some sort of caption. If you have specific questions or comments about a picture, let me know.

Eugene and I carpooled with John (a member of the rifle club at my college that I founded, and who had attended a previous shoot with Eugene and I at the Coyote Point Range just south of San Francisco) and two of his friends. The two friends had never shot anything before other than a pellet gun (one was 24, the other 13). Under the supervision of my Limping Curmudgeonly Quasi-Old Bastard(tm) self and Eugene, they rapidly learned how to shoot various versions of the Ruger 10/22, a Yugo SKS (pictured above), a Kel-Tec SU-16B, Bushmaster AR-15, Remington 700 in .30-06, Mossberg 500 throwing Winchester 1oz slugs (after a few shots, they rapidly lost interest in the Mossy, claiming something about their shoulders hurting...I dunno what they're talking about...the slugs were only moving at 1,600fps...*wink*), and some other stuff. They were extremely entertaining with the .22s, but had to leave early. Nevertheles, they left with large smiles and repeated vows to purchase a 10/22 each. It would seem that our mission was indeed accomplished, bringing new shooters into the fold.

On his first attempt with the Mossberg, Eugene managed to hit the two-foot-by-two-foot paper target at 100 yards only once, but somehow struck the wood support frame with three slugs, leaving Big Chunky Holes(tm) in said frame. His later accuracy was dramatically improved, though I must point out the second target is at 50 yards.

Much fun was had with an AR-15, resulting in Eugene's evil look, which goes along with the Evil Black Rifle quite well. I then demonstrated how to crouch tactically while nursing a bad foot, which was surprisingly difficult, though all the old army urban-combat training I received came back. Maybe once the foot heals I'll be able to do it a bit better.

Although they didn't allow charging the targets with fixed bayonets (some of the RSOs are such sticks-in-the-mud...), Eugene did charge his target with his Ka-Bar, resulting in its untimely demise.

We shot from about 9am straight through to 4pm, and left when we started running low on ammunition, water, and food. Buy stock in Break-Free, as we'll require a lot of CLP to clean the prodigious amounts of residue on the numerous firearms used in this event. Also, buy stock in various ammunition companies, including Federal, Winchester, various surplus ammo importers, Wolf Ammo, and so forth -- we'll be needing to replenish our respective inventories soon, as we consumed a substantial amount of ammunition.

All in all, a very satisfying day. Any NoR members in the SF Bay Area are more than welcome to join us during the summer. Eugene will be going to Texas (a free state!) in the fall, and a year afterwards I'll be transferring to a college on the east cost (probably New York...boo...) to finish off my college career. Until then, we're available as long as we've got ammo and some money...well, at least I am. I hardly speak for Eugene, but I doubt he'll turn down a range session...

The guy with the Garand is "Eugene", and if I did, it would be rather painful. The SKS bayonet is not terribly sharp...for three reasons:

1) It hurts more!
2) It's a thrusting weapon, not a slashing one. The tip is plenty sharp to pierce. Having and edge would just be asking for corrosion and breakage.
3) Occasionally after cleaning, I reassemble the bayonet backwards, so when folded the sharp edge is facing out, rather than the flat edge. Having it sharpened would cause disturbation when gripping the front grip area.

It's rather humerously fitting that in the socialist state of California there is a shooter at a range in a red shirt with CCCP and a hammer and sycle on it.

Gotta snicker out of that.

2/5ths of the Nation of Riflemen are armed with Soviet arms. Nice touching statement about capitalism prevailing over Marxist-Leninism. BTW, what's with the two toned stock M-1 Garand. The lower portion of the stock appears a lighter. Is it a patched job? I know it's not shadow. M-T mines wanna no (empty minds want to know).
