Anybody have a take on the Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter XP. I'm thinking about getting one in .223 for varmint. Comes with the adjustable Accutrigger, 22' barrel, detachable mag and synthetic stock. Only comes in a package that includes a Nikon 3-9x40 scope. I'm a lefty so my choices are a bit limited. Currently retails for about $525. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I had one a couple years ago. I think I paid $475 for mine. Nikon pro staff, 308 win. It was ok... The detachable mags are junk (at least mine was). Accuracy was good. It just didn't do it for me though. They are just a cheap made rifle in my opinion. I sold it and bought a M70. No comparison between the two. Although, it cost a lot more

I have two, no problems. $75 rebate is going on, so now's the time to get one if you're going to.

I have a Savage 11 trophy in .308 win. As mentioned before the Mags are not great. They have a flimsy feel to them. The accuracy has been around 1.5 MOA up to 300 yards for me with the rifle. This is an average over 350 or so rounds. I find this rifle to be good for the money. Great white tail/bear rifle for me. It is nice and light but the stock is awful so its a trade off.

Savage mag system sucks, unless you get one that uses AI/AI clone mags don't waste your time with Savage mag system.

I have the Axis and the mags are expensive and the tab is plastic, so jury still out for durability.

Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback. I had previously considered the Axis but was spooked by all the cost cutting measures. Yea it's cheap, but "cheap" has many definitions. Though the Mod 11 TH shares some of the same low budget features as the Axis (flimsy stock for example) it fits more into my comfort zone. Does that make sense?

American Rifleman has a good article on the savage package (It came in the mail today)
Just got a savage trophy hunter for my boys, they are left handed also, for the money with the rebate it's worth it to me as a entry level rifle for them.
Haven't shot it yet waiting for the wife who is also a lefty to come to the range with me.

Thanks I'll be checking out the article. Not easy being a lefty. In that price range, my only other options seeem to be the Axis or the Ruger Am. Just me, but I loathe both. Among other things, I can't see working a long action, I'm afraid my little .223 will get lost and have trouble finding home.

The 11 Trophy Hunter is in my opinion the best combination of price and quality. The Nikon scope and Accutrigger makes it a better choice than the similarly priced Remington ADL. With the rebate you should be able to buy the Savage for around $425. While the Axis and Ruger American are less expensive they just feel really cheap. One warning though, the Savage .223 with the varmint barrel weights about a pound more than the standard model and in my opinion is too heavy to lug around.
