Savage 110 .300 Mag to .308 Norma Swap help

The 7mm I might see, but why change a .300 WinMag to a .308 Normal Magnum? They are Tweedledum and Tweedledee with no significant difference, plus .308 Norma Mag is not made any more, so it is a reloading proposition.

(The .308 Norma Magnum had one purpose - to allow surplus .30-'06 Springfields and Enfields to be converted to a Magnum cartridge by just rechambering. With the cheap surplus rifles gone, so is the cartridge.)

Might work, but make sure your health insurance covers self-inflicted shoulder pain. Can you get the barrel or will it have to be made from a blank?

Can't do a 338 Lapua on a Savage action. But you could go from 300 Winmag to 7mm mag just by changing the barrel. I'm not sure if you have to swap the mag box out or not, probably not.

What are you changing calibers for?

.308 Norma would be easy, but WHY? Target shooters liked its longer neck as the .30-338 but the Win Mag is so well developed now that it is not worth the trouble.

7mm RUM. I dunno. Savage is now using a larger barrel shank for the WSMs which I would want for a RUM. Not to mention magazine fit.

Plenty of 7mm Rem Mag Savage Drop ins out there, plus you can enjoy the .284's nice hi BC' bullets- It would be a cheap and simple changeover-

I have a 30-338. Similar to the 308Norma. Only advantage is less powder per cartrige for the same velocities that a 300wm can get. (some may argue that because of the longer case neck that the cartridge is more accurate) -But I've seen several accurate 300wm's too.

I can't buy ammo over the counter anywhere. Even handloading I scrounge 338wm brass and hord it to myself for fireforming then loading to hunt with.

Probably not the best swap for your Savage.

Have you tried 7mm Rem mag brass. I find it easier to form than 338 brass. Inside lube the neck, one pass through the .308 Norma dies, go shooting.

BTW Great cartridge!!!

When the 308 Norma first came out it was common to take 300 H&H cases and run the H&H case into a RCBS 308 Norma trim die. I cut the case neck that came out the top of the die off with a fine tooth metal saw. The cases were then primed and loaded with 3.5 Gr of Bulls eye powder. Then corn meal was pored on top of the powder up to the neck. I opened up the basement windo and blast corn meal accros the yard. I then necked sized the cases followed by trimming then to the standard length. I loaded 165 Gr bullets and used H 4831 and Norma 205 powder. I still have some of the old H&H cases that I fire formed back in the early 60s. I shot pronghorn, mule deer, and elk using the fire formed cases. When the 300 Win came the 308 Norma died but it still is a fine big rifle round.

I am with Jim Keenan, why, but if you want a Norma, consider this. It is a inherently accurate cartridge, you can get more velocity, with less powder, doesn't hurt the shoulder as much as a .300 Win. (at least mine don't). Have known 3 other people that had Norma's, 2 on Enfield actions, 1 on a 98 action. Unknown barrels, but all have shot well under 1" @ 100 yards.

Have never compared it to a .300 Win mag, but have to a .300 Weatherby Mark V (german). This comparison was done in the gunsmithing lab at Oregon Institute of Technology in the early '70's.

My rifle: .308 Norma mag.
Husqvarna HVA action
Douglas 26" XX barrel with 1/2 " freebore
Jaeger trigger
Roberts stock (lot of castoff & drop)

My load:
Sierra 180 gr. BT
77 grs. 4831 (original 4831)
WW .300 H&H brass
CCI 200 primers
Chrono. 5 rounds avg. 3127 fps.
No signs of pressure, good case life.

My friends rifle:
Weatherby Mark V

His load:
Sierra 180 BT
81 grs. 4831 (original), we split a 50 lb. keg.
Norma brass
CCI 200 primers
Chrono. 5 rounds avg. 3074 fps.
No signs of pressure, good case life.

Most of the load info for the Norma is going to be in a 24" barrel.
Might add, this rifle was built in "69 and still shoots 3/4 " groups, if I do my part.

Hope I didn't bore anyone, but, I love the cartridge!
