It is my undersatanding 99's were made in .243 & .308 after 1945. From my research, they supposedly stop producing the schnabel fore end at that time as well :( but chuckhawks/Jon Y. Wolfe write up says the following:

My favorite 99 is a post war 99EG made at the Utica, NY plant in 1947....chambered in .300 Savage ....has a 24 inch medium taper barrel, a steel shotgun style butt plate, and slim Schnable fore end.

In addition, I found on gunsamerica M99A (http://www.gunsamerica.com/97148665...ifles/Model-95-99-Family/Savage_Model_99A.htm) 95-99 type lever, Serial #D967xxx, (71-81) 308 Winchester, 22" barrel, adjustable rear sight, tang safety, steel crescent buttplate, straight stock, sling swivels, factory drilled and tapped, 95% overall condition.

So why am i posting this, good question! I would prefer to invest/cherish/snuggle a .243 with schnabel fore end.

Is it out there?

THANKS FOR ANY REPLY!!!!

243 and 308 werent introduced until the mid-late 50's

probly your answer lies in putting the wood you want on a later 243 or 308 99

sounds expensive for what you want but if your wallet is deep enough there are craftsmen who will do anything you want.

Thanks for the tidbit

Looks like i'll stop looking for that combo and buy the best conditioned one i can afford. thanks again.
