Savage 99E in .243 win

Hi, I posted about this rifle on the greaybeard forum too. I'm looking to buy a savage 99E with the serial B842294. I just moved to Central Oregon and have wanted to reward myself with buying a nice rifle. I have never owned a gun before although I've shot them and used to be pretty good at it when I was in scouts. The gun looks pretty good it has a crack that has been repaired on the upper left side of the grip. The rifling is good but needs abit of a cleaning. It's got a price tag of 350 and I want to see if it can come down to around 300 cause of the crack. We will see it never hurts to ask. Since I'm new to these guns and have been out of shooting for awhile I would like to know if it's worth the price, what .243 is like as a caliber, and what the rifles are like in general. It's got the rotary mag and it's factory drilled for a scope. Thanks so much, Tyler

I've got the same gun - my first gun from my dad for deer hunting. .243 is a good cartridge - fast and flat shooting, little recoil. Works good on deer or varmints too. Around here ammo is about 20 bucks (+/-) for 20 rounds.

dont replace that stock, unless you keep it, and use the other for general use. the 243 is the second most valuable cal in the savage 99's, the most valuable being the 250-3000. also if it has the safety on the lever, not on the tang. A good to excellent version of this is worth about 600 bucks, according to the books. Regionally , that kinda goes up and down, but the 99 is a ever increasing value. if you can get it for 3 to 350 , that is a good price.

Thanks guys I think it should be a good rifle. I'm trying to find out when it was made as well. It has the safety on the right side avode the trgger guard, so I guess that would be on the lever. Tyler

The E model was the Economy version; that meant no round counter port on the left side of the receiver and non-walnut stocks. All in all, an E model will usually sell for a hundred less than an A or an F. Upper tang cracks in the stock are very common; original replacement stocks aren't the easiest to find but Boyds makes a good surrogate if you want to set the original one aside for a while. Values on the Savage 99s went thru the roof about three/four years ago, and they're recently started to come back down. $350 is a darn good price if the rifle is original and in reasonable shape, but it can't ever hurt to ask for a break.

243 is a fine all-around chambering that won't beat you up too badly at the range but which still has enough power for deer and coyotes.

The Savage 99 is superb rifle that is well worth the price.

I bought a 99E in .243 back in the seventies. I'm familiar eith the typical E, but this had a nice walnut stock, with nice checkering. Quite accurate. I traded it twoards a Sako L57 in .243. I wish I still had it. I may be out of touch, but the price dosen't sound too bad to me..........Essex

Keep the 99 and never sell it, that gun will grow on you.
