I'm on my way to buy a Savage Edge & the Savage Arms sight says a Axis is a 1:9" twist 22" length. I assume they are one in the same. I would like to get some bullets while I'm there to start tinkering with. Does anyone know of a good grain of bullet for this riffle.

For that twist rate most will say 45-69 grain but wait on more knowledgeable posters to show up.

I handload some honady 55gr V-max in my savage stevens 223 rem with some h335,with excellent results,,I'm pretty sure my stevens has the same specs as your edge

Thanks for the input. I'm going to grab some 55's & maybe something from each side of it. I wish I know something about rifle powder but I guess I'll just grab some Varget since that is the only thing Wally has on the shelf that I have heard suggested for both my .223 & 30-06. I wish I could find a nice ball that would work in my powder drop.

.223 with a 1-9 twist...very common barrel in AR's. A lot of .223's built for varmints have 1-12 twists. The faster 1-12 is good for the lighter bullets, 40-55's. The 1-9 is considered best for the 55-62 gr. bullets but you can work a bit either way with this.

A very good reference for loading for this caliber can be found here:

Read the whole article. It gives a lot of good info on your barrel twist and what bullets it will like. I have a "few" .223 rifles that I reload for. Everything from 527 CZ's, Remington 700, and a variety of AR based rifles with barrels from 14.5" to 24" with 1-7, 1-8, 1-9, and 1-12 twists. They all have their favorite loads.

Powders I use include: 2230, H-335, H-322, Varget and some others.

Thanks everyone for commenting. hans471 thank you for the link. I had picked up a lot of cases from the range & done my first loading for a rifle. I full length sized these with some Lee carbon dies & measured the cases. I only needed to trim a few of these to meet the specs in the manual.

I loaded some 40 gr V Max with no problem but when I went to load some 55 gr V Max it shaved the sides of the bullets. I only tried 2 & stopped loading these. When I got to the range with the 40's & started loading the rounds into the rifle some loaded without problem but others seemed a little tight when I cammed the bolt over. They all fired fin & came out with ease. I forgot my vise so I didn't credit any of the targets but some of the loads looked very promising. I had 3 different loads group .75", another 1", & the other 2 weren't to bad ether. I hope to get true results soon. Still need to figure what out what I'm doing wrong or not doing.

Are you using new brass, or once-fired? Also, what type of sizing die are you using?

Regarding shaving of the jacket, did you put a light chamfer on the inside of the case-neck?

I found the problem last night. I checked one of the processed case on my sizing die & it went with ease so I pulled the bullet that shaved & it was very tight so I looked a the last step befor setting the bullet. My powder drop is tapered & I must have been rolling the neck over. The 40 gr was boat tail & was probaly poping the neck back out. The 50 gr had a flat Bottom.

This rifle loading is a slight curve from handgun but I'm glad I started it.
