So, Dick's has their Savage 11 VT rifles going for $399 this week. I don't need anything in .223 or .308. The only ones I'd consider are .243 and 22-250, they may offer a .204 Ruger but not around here.

These rifles have a 24" heavy varmint barrel, Accutrigger, with 4-12x40 Bushnell scope. All the ones I looked at seemed like nice rifles, none of the scopes were mounted level, the scope mounts are very much entry level.

I've had such a run of good luck with Savage lately I'm tempted to try one. I have no plans to shoot varmints with this, it's pretty much for range use.

$399 is a darn good price, the cheapskate side of me says get one. The practical side asks if I really need another round which may, or may not, add anything to .223, .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor.

Help THR :(

Buy it.

You know you want it. Life is short, do the things you want and buy the guns you want to buy. Just my $0.02, and you can take it to the bank and cash it.

Buy one in .308, pull the barrel and trade with someone who has a .243 barrel. I might be able to help you out there.. :)

With a 4-12x40 Bushnell scope it sounds like Dick put it together. Savage doesn't use Bushnell's. Not that it matters. Dick's regular price is $579.99. $180 is $180.
"...if I really need..." "Need" has nothing to do with it. It's "want". Partial to the .243 myself. Likely cost more to shoot than .223 though. Mind you, I don't use factory myself.

At that price I don't think you could go wrong with either caliber. I always wanted a .22-250 just to see what kind of accuracy I could get out of it.

OK team, I pulled the trigger on the 22-250 this morning. Will post a few pics later.

Thanks for helping me "save" a pile of dough :)

I almost bought one of these but changed my mind when I picked it up. A 24" varmint barrel makes it really heavy.

Great choice in caliber! Back in the day I thought the .22-250 was a good way to go in terms of a small caliber varmint rifle. Will be interesting to see what kind of accuracy you can get out of it.

Pics up

Here she is in all her splendor :)

As MAKster said, its on the heavy side, for range use that's not a bother for me.

Hope to get it to the range next Wednesday.

Is that plastic stock any better then the one on my Axis? I could change point of impact by moving my hand or front bag on the forend of the stock.
I've stiffened mine with aluminum arrow shafts and epoxy.
Looks like the scope bases have the same issue as my Axis, had to get extended bases for proper eye relief.

Nice. I've been hoping to catch a Savage 11 Trophy Hunter in 308 or something similar on sale during black friday. It would be my first bolt action and from what I've read sounds like it would be good just to mess around with.

I looked at the savage rifles on sale at Dick's. Heck of a bargain at that price but I was looking for dual purpose, accurate target range AND hunting.
I thought the 11VT was too heavy for hunting, and the Axis (was only $269!) had the sucky stock and didn't have the adjustable trigger.
I probably should have just bought 1 of each but instead I ordered a Tikka T3 SSL.
I would have spent considerably less money on 2 Savage rifles.
