I have an old smith and wesson. I believe it is a No.3 It has the schoefield patent on the revolver and the serial no. is 4039 anyone have an idea on the age. Iwill try and get a picture on this site thank you in advance for any help.

A picture would help with identification. If it is a Smith & Wesson Schoefield with the serial number 4,039 it was made in 1876.

2nd Model Schofield. Someone's sitting on a LOT of money :)

if it's a non military version (no US marking), it's worth even more.

If it has some large numbers on the backstrap, it might be SFPD issue. (more $$$)

On the other side is a grip carved out of animal horn, not crudely done but mirroring the other grips contour. It looks like a beater but i figure it was a tool and thats why its a piece of history. I thank everyone that responded .
