Scope Choice for a 10/22

I recently purchased a Ruger 10/22. I already have two scopes that I could use for this rifle.

-Tasco World Class 3-9 x 40
or
-Bushnell .22 RimFire

Which would be the best scope for this particular rifle?

I have the cheap Tasco. Even my 12 year old shoots like a champ with it.

Almost anything will work on a .22 except for scopes with 100 yard parallax settings (centerfire).


I like the following:


Simmons WTC, this has lots of magnification, really good glass for a $99 scope, and an adjustable objective. It is big though and heavy, this will fill the target shooting role very well on a budget.


The other is the Nikon Prostaff 4x. This is a fixed 4x, parallax is fixed at 50 yards. This has excellent glass for the money - perhaps the best in this price range, and being a fixed power, not a variable, the image is very crisp. It is $99 at Wal-Mart. This is the best all-purpose rimfire scope. It is light, handy, and high quality. Can shoot targets, hunt...does it all.


I wouldn't spend more than $100 on a scope for a .22 unless you are a very serious competitor. I've shot tons of 1-hole groups with the Simmons, and no scope is going to make those groups any smaller at 25y or 50y.

Consider getting the Weaver TO-9 rail for the 10/22 ($9). It replaces the cheesy 3/8" scope rail with a full size Weaver rail with grooves. This lets you use real 1" rings, and these will not move or shift.

I have a Barska 3-12x40 AO that I got from SportsmanGuide for $50...has been a great scope. And I use Weaver rings that screw right to the receiver, have about 1" of rise so I can see the sights under them if I need to.

if you are going to squirrel/varmint hunt with it, the 4power is enough. if you wanna paperpunch at 100 yds, you need higher power.

Try a Bushnell for a .22 - You might like it. - Or go for something that will adjust.

Not much difference in price.

I like an adjustable scope. = IMOHO

IMO, pass up anything with a ¾" main tube. (And anything made in China, their quality is still not up to average.)

I think a couple specials ago (thats how i've begun to measue time) at Natchezss, i picked up a simmons 6-20x50AO (i think thats it, or very similar) for $89.

Overkill sure, but i'd rather overbuy than underbuy. Thats why its adjustable

Get an adjustible paralax. Just in case you need or want to shoot an occasional longer distance.

I took out a 10/22 last weekend that I had picked up in a trade a while back. Slapped on a 4 power scope and after a couple rounds a 25 yrds to zero found, to my amazement, that it would print 5 rounds touching at 50 yards, nice 1/2 inch groups. Upon moving out to 100 yards everything fell apart, 5 & 6 inch groups. I set up the rifle on sandbags and checked the paralax and it was about 6 inches at 100 yards . If I worked hard at keeping my cheek weld, eye position, at best I could get 2 inch groups .
I swapped the scope for an old 3X9 Norinco with fixed paralax at 100 yards and tried again, 5 shot 1 inch groups all day long at 4 power . Dropped back to 50, still 1 inch groups.
I'm gonna go get an adjusable paralax scope for this 10/22, I wish I had got it out to the range sooner.

GO BIG - you won't be disappointed - No matter what caliber the gun is - you are aiming at a target - you need to see it - bigger = better, IMHO.

Probably as many different answers as there are respondents. I like a 4X on a .22 myself.

I have a Bushnell .22 Rimfire 3-9x32 on my 597. Parallax is 50 yards, but the lower magnification is plenty useful (and right on) at shorter ranges, and 9x is more than enough for any range at which you might be using .22LR.

I would recommend it- it's a good scope at a low price. It's entry level, but quite honestly, is there a need to put a $200 scope on a rifle that costs less than that (that you plan to feed bulk pack bricks, by the way)?

I would think that either the Bushnell or Tasco rimfire scopes would work; you can pick if you want a fixed power or zoom based on your own preferences.

Get a scope with an adjustable objective, it will allow you to focus on close objects. Also some higher power variables cannot focus under 25 yds, even with an AO. Something around 3x12 or 4x15 would be good.

I have a 4x34mm BSA air rifle scope on my remington 512. I like this scope. Cost 62 clams at gander mountain. Works good. AO from 10m to infinity. I wish I would have got the 3-12 cause potting red squirrels at 50yds gets tough with only 4x.
