Put a youth stock on my Rem 700 for the kids to use. Now I need to move the scope up. Do I move it up the same amount the stock was shortened or do I put it where my big ol' head can see out of it properly, knowing a smaller head will be shooting it eventually? I plan to use it until the kids learn to shoot. My plan is putting a slip-on recoil pad over the youth stock so I can use it. Any thoughts?

I think you have the right ideas. If you can have the kids present while you're making the adjustments, you can use them as "assembly jigs". Anyway, if you have to move the scop forward or back just a little, you won't loose your zero much if at all, so long as you rings can stay put. Once you get close in other words, the final tweaking can be done at will.

I mount all my scopes as far foreword as I can get them, and still get a full field of view when I bring the rifle up and lean into it.

There is nothing worse then for a new shooter especially, to get hit with a scope while trying to learn.

It takes forever to get over it once it happens.

Kids are amazingly adaptive creatures!
Far better they have to work at getting their head far enough forward to see through it clearly.

That will give an extra margin of safety if they take a shot from an awkward position while hunting.
