Well, I've recently had to play "musical scopes" due to a gravity check (crash! yep, gravity still works) on my varmint rifle. 3-9 X 44 got pulled off my .308 and mounted n my .223 since deer isn't in season and varmints are.

So now, I'm looking to replace the scope on my .308. While a whiz-bang scope with all the bells and whistles would be nice, I A) can't buy one without giving up food and electricity for a month and B) am not going to shoot deer beyond about 400 yards much anyway.

1) So the scope I'm looking for will be between 3 or 4 on the low end, even a really good fixed 4X would be acceptable.

2) Anything larger than a 44mm objective won't fit on my rifle without buying higher rings, which I don't want to do.

3) Dusk and dawn are primary shooting times in the woods, so light transmission is a good thing.

4) Rangefinding reticles aren't really necessary, but repeatable clicks are. I don't want to click off on a deer at 400 with a 15mph crosswind and not be able to get back to zero at 300 with no wind.

The stickies at the top seemed to deal with long range shooting and tactical scopes, I hope someone can give me a point in the right direction. I'm been sorta happy with Simmons and Bushnell in the past, but they are somewhat lacking in the repeatability department. I wouldn't mind spending around $300, give or take.

Thanks.

For $300, two of the best you'll find, in my opinion, are the Super Sniper scopes, or the Burris 3200 series.

For what you're looking for, I'd give a hard look at the Burris. The quality for price is unmatched.

Mueller vs Bushnell

I have both of these, and it looks like your constraints are very similar to mine. The Bushnell came from wallyworld @ 119 bucks and its 6-18x44 with adjustable parallax on the front. This one is really great for smaller targets. The Mueller is 4-12x54 same adjustable front, a little better light, and also came in round the 120 buck range when ordered from their web page. Both hold zero and have finger windage/el knobs the Mueller is on a .308 Remington Model 7 and the Bushnell is on the 91/30 Mosin.

The Bushnell Elite (Bausch & Lomb) scopes are a step up in quality over the standard Bushnell line. That Elte 4200 3-9x40 that PremiumSauces recommneded is a GREAT scope, especially for that money. Last i checked, SWFA had it $15 cheaper,

I just bought a 6-24x44 TruGlo target/varment scope on clearance from Natchez Shooting Supply for $54 to mount on my Rem 700 VTR .308 check out their site for some good deals

VORTEX DIAMONDBACK 4-12. We are selling them for 199.99 and they are right there on par with the Nikon Buckmaster series, optically... but you get more scope for a bit less money.

That sounds very promising - the Vortex - this brand has a "VIP Warranty" - lifetime, transferable, strong. I'm gonna look into the Vortex myself.
