Scope for 44 Super Blackhawk

I purchased a .44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk under the advise of the THR members.

I could not be happier with the gun. It is absolutely great, accurate, and with the weight the 260gr CORBON Hunter loads are not punishing.

I think I've practiced enough that I'm ready for hunting.

I've never mounted a scope on a revolver or pistol and I was wondering which scope would be best, and about mounting options.

After having a BSA fail after 3 rounds, I went whole hog and got a Leupold 2x for my SBH Hunter. It works very well for me with full-tilt loads from Garrett and Buffalo Bore. I am sure there are other quality scopes which work well also. You'll need to add some sort of mounting system to your frame to attach the rings on your stainless SBH. I'm not sure what is available since my Hunter came with a mounting system and Ruger rings.

But I don't have one on my SBH. It's a 10 1/2" model and I was shooting a gong target at 85 yards today with irons.

Depends on what you want from the scope.

I have been using Burris and Leupold 2X scopes on magnums for years with out any problems. I like Weigand mounts and rings on revolvers.

That's a nice scope for sure. I would buy Weigand base and rings. He used to discount the rings if you bought both rings and base, check the web site.

Whatever mount you decide on, make sure you locktite (blue or even red) the mounting screws or they will quickly work loose. I fought a wandering zero on my first scoped shooting session, only to realize the scope had worked loose. Despite retightening they kept working loose until I applied locktite.

I stick with iron sights. A scope tempts me to take longer shots than are wise with a .44 pistol.

What is the field of view at 100 yards. I like a 2X20 Scope. Field of view should be about 20feet @100 yards.

Something to note:

A scope magnifies the motion of your gun/hands. My 2X doesn't bother me, but I probably wouldn't much care for a 4X unless it's on a hunting gun that I planned to shoot off sticks.

ArmedBear is right on. I bought a variable pistol scope and it was OK at it's low setting but when it was turned up you HAD to have some sort of rest. I sold it after a few times out with it.

The scope I chose is 2.5x. Is that going to cause this problem?

The 2.5x should be fine. Locktite the screws on the mounts. I prefer the Leupold 2x personally. Shooting a handgun with a scope takes some getting used to. Even at 2x, it really shows you just how shaky you are with a handgun. Don't expect to really look over the target in the field like you might with a rifle scope. Pull gun up, aim, shoot. Otherwise, supporting it right on target is tough for me. I carry a monopod while hunting as my rest. Can't depend on a tree to be handy and if it is, I'll use that. Tried other rests, but for flexible woods use, the monopod works best for me.

I basically adjust it high when I'm walking for a just in case shot and adjust the length shorter if I'm in a stand or on the ground depending if I'm sitting or standing.

This scope has lines calibrated out to 250 yds/meters, using a 240 grn. 44 caliber bullet @ 1400 fps. I have this scope, and two 22lr scopes by them, and they are clear, bright, repeatable and well made.

I use this one which is less expensive and very well made. The only downside is that the rubber foot can come off (it covers a carbide tip for snow/ice), but I but a little silicone adhesive on it and no worries since.

Paochow, now I'm set, thanks. THR is great. I got my scope, rail, rings, the monopod. I would not have even thought about the monopod, but everyone is right it would steady the shot and take out how

shaky you are with a handgun

I can't wait for it all to arrive

Check out Handgunhunter.com There are alot of great shooters out there. im shooting a contender in 44mag and 7-30 waters and like said before its verry different shooting a scoped handgun. Pratice and pratice and when you think that your good enough shoot some more. a rule of thumb is when you hit a 10'' papper plate with all six that is your max range. mine with oppen sights is 50 yds off a rest (Super BlackHawk 44 mag)with my 7-30waters. its 100yds with a rest. It took me around 100 rds before I was able to shoot a decent groop with the contender and i now have 3 tgts with 3 rds at 100yds at 1/2'' and on a avarage 1'' to a 2'' groop.
