I cut down my Mosin's barrel to 18 3/8 for a Scout rifle project.

The make a forward mounted rail that seats in frame for the rear sight.

This is it.http://www.cdnninvestments.com/mona91scmone.html

I cut the front portion of the Weaver rail off, because of the unnecessary length of it for my red dot 2X scope.

The mount itself is all aluminum and seems well built, the screws are cruddy and have bent after the first round was fired. I re leveled the mount and set it in 2600 PSI apoxy hoping it would hold, but it didn't.

Getting it apart and the epoxy out, will be a fun job though... jk.

I never realized how much force a scope on a fairly high powered rifle underwent. I imagine the forward mounting is part of the issue.

I am looking for alternative ways to affix the mount. I am a DIY sort of person but could use some advice.

I have thought about setting it to level and trying to cast it in lead, so to speak, or solder it.. but I am unsure what solder I could use.

I don't have experience with drilling and tapping, but do have a drill press. I am hoping to avoid this option if there are other ways to do it.

Thanks in advance for your response.

edit add.. I have been thinking about casting it in zinc also, I imagine it would take about $.15

There is no way to solder or weld aluminum to steel.

Clean & degrease everything.

Then put it on with Brownell's Acraglas and the screws provided with the mount.

The reason it is kicking off is, there is a mismatch between the mount contour and the barrel.
And apparently there is no recoil lug or surface contact to take the shock, so the screws are taking it all.

Thanks for the advice.

After reading your post, I remembered I had some leftover fiberglass resin from a motor cycle repair, so I am trying that first. I imagine the properties may be similar between the two.

If the fiberglass resin fails, I will either order your suggested solution or get somebody to drill and tap the thing for me.

Thanks RC.

I think I got it figured out

I was about to take the clamp off the mount and was still worried about the resin solution. That stuff is really hard and may crack under recoil.

I had replaced the stripped out screws that held the mount to the sides of the old rear sight mount and replaced them with a pin. Before casting it all in resin. Thinking it would be easier than trying to rethread the thing.

Then! Eureka! ...I realized that there was plenty of room to put another pin through the old sight mount about 1.5 inches behind the first pin. So I put in an 1/8 inch pin. Now I have two still pins holding the mount rather than one.

The first pin was so far to the front, it was causing a pivot point that created the whole situation. Hopefully with it now being held by two pins this will resolve the issue.
