Hey Guys I know this will sound wierd but had anyone ever used a varmint scope during whitetail hunt? Will it work? Did it work? I just got a hold of nice 6-18*50 and I dont usually hunt small game...

People seem to use the high powered scopes all the time, but when they try to find the game animal, all they usually see is a small portion of them and won't be able to tell where exactly they are going to hit. At the minimum 6 power you would have the same problem inside of 40 yards or so, beyond that it would be fine. Not the best setup, but do what works. Around here it's shotguns only and most deer are taken inside of 60 yards.

It is a cool scope at the coffee shop, but not practical. Still can be used. I started out my boys with fixed 4x scopes, they got into a one-upmanship mindset and wanted more power (said Capt. Kirk, "but she's giving all she's got" replied Scotty) ended up going with 2.5x7 after all was said and done. Them boys are learning said their daddy :neener:

If you're stand hunting and the probable shots are out past 25 or 40 yards, 6X isn't bad. My father used 6X scopes quite a bit. 100 yards or more? No problem.

The obvious problem is the relatively narrow field of view if you're woods-hunting where the distance could be quite close.
