Althought 19 year old Swiss soldiers may do well with the shallow V on the standard K31 sights, I certainly don't. I have been checking all the obvious sources for peep sights and scopes. Here's what I've found:

Only Mojo seems to have a drop-in rear peep for the K31. You can use the existing front post or their apertured front post. No one seems to make a fiber optic front post, such as the Williams Firesight. Any one have any experience with the Mojo on this rifle and/or experience with the two types of front posts?

S-K and Darrell make drop-in bases for Scout type scopes. Darrell is for Weaver style, S-K has Weaver and S-K style. Any experiences to help me choose between these two?

AIMsurplus offered an aluminum scout mount for a while but it is no longer on their website. Anyone know anything about it?

All the clamp-on scope mounts seem to be offset from the axis of the barrel. For the life of me, I can't see why anyone would want to have to deal with windage varying with range. It's enough of a job to have elevation vary. No off-axis scopes for me.

There seems to be one somewhat expensive drill and tap conventional scope mounting (St-Marie?) but drill and tap is a last resort.

If i've left out something important, please clue me in. Currently i'm thinking of a Darrell mount and an inexpensive NcStar 2.5x30 to start.

Your comments and experiences and very valuable to me.

Go HERE for lots of info on the K31.

The aluminum mount was probably the St. Marie. They make diopter sights that are great. Go HERE to see what is available. They sell through Brownells and Graf & Sons.

I have a Darrells Mount on my M38 and can't say enough about the mount or the man himself. My rear sight was not quite right and when mounted the scope mount was not parallel to the barrell. He took the time over the phone to have me check some measurements to ensure that it was my rear sight that was screwed up and not the mount. He also gave me a little advice on how to get the mount in line with the barrell. The result was fantastic and he impressed me as the kind of craftsman that stands behind his work.

<They make diopter sights that are great.>

I'm not familiar with diopter sights. How do they work? Are they just variable diameter peeps? Or do they have lenses in them? What kind of sight picture do they give? Are they suitable for range work, plinking, hunting or what? Need some education here.

Thanks.

If you could point me to where you found this, I'd really like to see it. I was under the impression that you couldn't mount a optical sight directly above the receiver because the brass ejected straight up into the mount.

There was a picture I posted on here from snipercentral of a swiss police marksman who had a K31 in a bullpup stock and optical sight mounted right above the receiver.

BillinNH,
Diopter is what they call them in Europe. Essentially a peep sight. I believe they use them more for target shooting than anything else but I'm sure they will work for pretty much anything. You can get different diameters for the rear sight and different inserts for the front, whichever is best for the shooter.
