I have squirrel hunted with Ruger Mk II's in the past, but my eyes are not what they used to be. Is there an aftermarket scope mount for the Mk II that does not require drilling and tapping the pistol? If so, have any of you used it and how did it measure up. I have never even shot a scoped pistol, so I have a pretty significant learning curve.

I used SoLows on my 22/45 to mount a 30mm Ultradot. It is a VERY accurate setup. Lots of older gents have asked me about it. Same as you--eyes aren't what they used to be.

I don't think there's much of a learning curve with the red dots. You'll enjoy this setup, I'm sure. Mine's been on for a couple of months now, and it's still zeroed. Not too difficult to mount, either.

Good luck. Here's mine:

I've used red dot sights on various Mk II's in bullseye competition for a long time. For the latest one, I had a pair of grooves machined into the top of the gun so I can put on an Ultradot with no mount at all.

I have a 22/45 set up with SoLow mounts and a red dot scope. It's a great combination!

I would only advise that whatever you do, get a mount that sits low. Either a Solow, or a screw-on basic weaver rail. High scope mounts of any kind make the gun feel really odd, I found--I tried the B-Square clamp-on mount on a whim, and while it worked just fine, it, , , -umm, , , , well, , , let me just say that if you're in the St Lous area, you can swing by and I'll give it to you.

I'm going to get a Docter red-dot for my MkII. From pictures I've seen of MkIIs with this setup, the Docter mount replaces the rear iron sites. I have a Docter on my Uzi and love it.

I am using the B-Square clamp on mount and it is nice. It also adds weight to an otherwise heavy Mark II Government Target model. This mount does allow the use of the iron sights as well, so if the batter fails I can still shoot accurately, but it does position the scope rather high and it is a bit unweildy. Kind of looks like a Star Wars laser pistol and that is a bit on the cool side!

Bam-Bam ....... and others with SoLow .... followed your suggestion ... got mine yesterday .. and red dot came today. It's only a basic Simmons but should do .... I have installed the whole deal for now .. without using the adhesive or locktite anywhere .. want to check first and see if it zero's OK.

Come back in a few minutes and I'll post a pic .. need to take one of the set-up.

Watch this space ..... :)

bernie . I near forgot ...
If I were to get a solow mount, how tough is it to drift out the rear sight and how tough is it to install the new piece into the dovetail?
There is a set screw on left of my rearsight - that needs loosened. I then tried drifting it out from left and right .... using a brass drift and resting gun on a plastic cutting block. From left . seemed a bit reluctant ... tried from right ... and after a few sharp taps it started moving .. continued until out ...... ..wiped off brass marks.

The insert (aluminum) for the dovetail is on mine a sloppy fit ... but no matter cos ... it will stay near center once captive between the two screws of rear mount .... so I don't anticipate probs there.

As I said earlier . I have not finalized fitting (with adhesive . and locktite on screws) .... in case any proba when tested. If it zero's OK then I'll refit more permanently.

In my case it obscures the S/N .. no biggie I guess .. I have it noted down elsewhere.

Hey Hey!! Nice!! You're gonna enjoy it.

I bumped into another guy at the range with a scoped Ruger .22. He said, "Before the red dot, it was a good gun. Now, it's a GREAT gun!!" I couldn't agree more.

:D

<-- Words of experience. While the clamp on types are well and fine, once you feel the difference between them and the Weaver rail - - it's night and day.

My Mark II came pre drilled/tapped otherwise I never would have bothered to have it done. After feeling the difference it makes, I'd never go any other route.

I mounted a Weaver rail - which sits low enough so as to not interfere with the iron sights - and changes between the scope and the red dot are pretty quick w/just a bit of zeroing in required.

SoLow Web Site

I just ordered a SoLow mount from the web site. Anybody have any problems with delivery? The order form seemed kind of simple, and no confirmation email for the order. I ordered it on a Saturday, so the email may come tomorrow. Anyway, I'll let you know when it comes in and how it works out.

I had probs ordering on line ....... the mailform thing being used seems less than ideal.

I called him (Dan IIRC) .. this number gives a recorded message only I think ... 888 887 6569. The other number tho is ..... 860 676 1050 .. try that. I got a message on that too but Dan called me back in the evening and I ordered that way .. delivery was quick.

Call him tomorrow to check on order status .. he's a helpful guy .. you should have no probs.

FYI the new 2004 ruger catalog advises that all new MK2 pistols with adjustable sights are now drilled and tapped for a Weaver rail that is included with the pistol.
