A BLACK police bodyguard who protected the Duchess of Cornwall has won $70,000 compensation after suing Scotland Yard for "over-promoting" him because of political correctness.

Sgt Leslie Turner -- the first black personal protection officer to guard the royal family -- will receive the "racial discrimination" payout after reaching an out-of-court settlement with London's Metropolitan Police.
His representatives argued he landed the prestigious job as Camilla's bodyguard only because he was black.

It was claimed that as a result of being over-promoted and not receiving proper training and support, Sgt Turner made mistakes which led to him being re-assigned.

He launched legal proceedings against the force in October and Scotland Yard chiefs have agreed to pay "substantial" compensation -- understood to be about $70,000 -- to the married father of two.

Colleagues of Sgt Turner, who was born in Britain, say he is a "model professional"' who had a good relationship with Prince Charles and Camilla.

He began guarding Charles in August, 2004 and was re-assigned to Camilla in February last year when the royal couple were engaged.

But in June, it emerged he had suddenly been replaced.

Royal insiders stress that the decision to move him was not taken directly by Clarence House. But they concede that the race row is extremely embarrassing for Charles and Camilla.

Had Sgt Turner's case reached a tribunal, potentially embarrassing secrets about Charles and Camilla's lives may have been aired.

A Met spokesman refused to confirm the compensation deal.

No doubt this decision has been taken for reason of preventing Royal embarrasment. To get promoted from the rank of Constable to Sergeant, and Sergeant to Inspector, he would have had to pass one 90 (old system) or 150 question exam, sit another "practical" exam consisting of seven role-playing exercises and complete an application form, and then be selected.

As a Sergeant you then sit two courses, of two weeks apiece - one a foundation course and one covering custody issues. In almost every case you are then moved to another station and spend a year's probation. To be a Protection Officer, especially that close to the Royals you will also have done a lot of specialized courses - driving, shooting etc etc - which have a high (for obvious reasons) failure rate. Over-promotion is something you are responsible for, if it happens.

dolanp, that was a great story. I've never seen that before, but it's exactly the direction I see some people in this country heading. My son is 8 and they still won't keep score at his basketball games! Don't want anyone to lose, right, because that would mean someone won. Sheesh.

Erm, let me get this straight. He got a job based on what minorities always cry over, Equal Opportunity Employment regardless of knowledge or training, then when he gets re-assigned he SUES and wins because he only got the job based on EOE?! What kind of screwed up nonsense is that?

So let me guess....if you are black you can sue for not being promoted, even if in reality the white guy that got the job you wanted was more qualified. Bit of course they have to keep the proper ratio of races employed in various positions.

Now your race has bitched whined and moaned to the point you can be less qualified and still get the job over a more qualified white person because of PC and now you are bitching and whining because you are now being promoted?

There will always be crappers that abuse a system that was meant to be something positive. However, that abuse being evident now should be an indicator that the system has gone long enough, and so it is time to allow for true equality before the law. Therefore, affirmative action and the rest of preferential treatment legislation should be abolished.

i'm sorry, but I think this guy might actually have had a good case. It is very possible that he did not understand that he was unqualified for the job until he got there. At that point, he has one chance to make it. Let's say he gets promoted to this high position, realizes that he is sorely lacking in the background that everyone else has. What is he supposed to do? If he publicly acknowledges the mistake, he will never have any shot for that kind of prestigious position gain. He may have even approached his superios about his misgivings and was told "no, you'll do fine, just give a chance." Any argument from him at that point would reflective a perceived lack of confidence and, again, would ruin any future opportunity for advancement.

If I read this situation correctly, he was caught between a rock and a hardplace, knowing he was unqualified but unable to do anything about it without hurting his own career. So, he sucked it up and tried to do his best, always second-guessing himself until this charade was revealed.

If this was in fact how this played out, I agree that they set this guy up, maybe even intentionally. PC is pure garbage.
 
ah, but did they settle the suit because he was right, becuase it was more PC for him to be more right whether he was or not, or because they didn't want him testifying about the private lives of his proctectees?

taken individually, each of the relevant facts COULD be true and straightforward... collectivly, it seems very unlikely....
