We took the dogs out today in the nasty weather to chase a few hogs around. We just about came back with a good case of hypothermia, it rained, rained, and got colder and colder. It was probably a good thing we are all in such fine shape with a think layer of blubber... :D These right here make 36 for the year so far, which is a bit above what we normally run around this time.

No real monsters, just some good eating pigs. All of them are headed off to some childrens homes so the kiddos can eat good.

Are them thar javelina's?????

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but I'll never (and I tried once) eat a close relative of a rat.

I learned, after survival training suggested and advocated eating rat...that it would never be for me.

And to feed it to the kids...there has to be something better for them

Otherwise...good day of hunting..hoorah!

Nope, no javalina, those are feral hogs, to me they taste alot better than domestic hog, not the same texture of meat and when carefully taken care of in the field they eat very well.

You have a few of them out in Arizona, I know of one huntable population along the Virgin River, actually they got started outside Mesquite Nevada and just sorta spread. I found sign all along the river up into Utah. I've heard a few exist around Prescott, but have never seen those with my own eyes.

We try to keep the dogs away from Javalina, they really can tear a dog up bad in a hurry.

Javelina are danged good eating! I like to barbecue the little hams, and cook the backstraps to snack on while the hams cook.

They're not hard to field dress, although they're much easier to skin right away, rather than wait very long. Tough hide, too. :) I usually just keep the hams and backstraps and use the rest for bait.

Cool, st!

I hope we have as good luck later this month. I'm taking 4 guys out camping on our property on the last weekend and we're going to spend much of our time hog hunting. Last year we got 4 but that's a lot on our land. I guess we don't have the same level of infestation that ya'll have (Thank GOD!)!
