Hi all. I have a new Mossberg 4x4 rifle with a supposed "screw on muzzle brake," which I do not intend to use. Anyway, when I get her out of the box and attempted to remove the brake in order to put on the supplied thread protector, the thing wouldn't budge. I've tried everything, heating it up, penetrating oil, even pushing a steel rod through the holes for extra leverage. All that seems to accomplish is making the barrel wiggle about wildly. Yes, I'm turning it counter clockwise and YES that's what the manual says to do. :p

Any advice? I'm worried all my jiggling may have somehow warped the barrel. Thanks for the help.

Look in the threads of the supplied protector and see what way they turn first. Then get a couple of hardwood blocks, clamp them together and drill a hole between them slightly smaller than the barrel OD. Clamp barrel in vice with your homemade wooden barrel protector holding it and turn the brake the correct direction and remove it.:) PS you should not need heat.:(

Frog,
I have been working on my rifles for years and your wooden block idea is the best I ever heard. Out to my work shop I go. Thanks a ton for sharing that idea.
I have always used heavy rubber (automobile) hoses/tubing. Your suggestion is much better.

Removing Muzzlebreak

I have made a lot of muzzlebreaks and never seen one with left hand threads. Al

Muzzlebreaks

Nope I haven't done one on an AK, I don't work on those type rifles, just bolt guns. Al

Well he has already heated it up and tried to remove it so I think the loc-tite idea was thought about already. When all else fails do what the wife would do----Call or email the factory and ask how they would remove it.:neener: I have had to resort to this a time or two myself.:D
