A lot of folks have been inquiring about and talking about buying/selling them. I've also noticed quite a few in the classifieds and at gunshows lately. Is it a renewed interest in pistol calibers or are more people dumping them at bargain prices? Could it have anything to do with the AWB or is it just a summertime thing?

Don't know exactly... but I have noticed the same thing. Lots of pistol caliber carbines selling lately... and tons of handguns. Something else I have noticed lately is that, in my area, no rifles are selling except pistol caliber carbines and AR-15s.

My friend tried selling 2 nice long guns (a nice Winchester 30-30, and a nice older Winchester 12 ga. autoloader) and couldn't get anyone to touch 'em with a 10' pole. Nobody was wanting anything to do with any long guns. He finally traded them off at a loss. I'll bet if it was deer season, it would have gone quite differently.

I like rifles and all, but tend to do most of my shooting at pistol ranges. I think a lot of people are seduced by the inexpensive practice ammo, and the ability to shoot a carbine at the pistol range. In the last month alone Ive seen guys with .22 and 9mm ars, .357 and 44 magnum levers, beretta storms, keltecs, ruger pc9 and several others I cant identify. As for the handguns, everyone is jumping on the ccw bandwagon. So if you are looking for a rifle, maybe now is the time to buy one.

Not sure about the carbine part, but Sapper is correct, I just picked up a LNIB 700 in 300wm for $325 w/ a Millet gold 3-12 and leuy rings/bases.

It may be that as time goes on and it becomes harder to find places to shoot rifles close to major population centers, more folks are turning to pistol caliber carbines as a way of getting something bigger than a .22, but not as noisy as a high power rifle.

Or it could just be that more people are finding out how fun they are to shoot. :) I have an EMF/Rossi M1892 in .357, a Marlin Camp 45, and an Underwood M1 Carbine. They are a ton of fun to shoot out to 50 yards or so, are easy on the shoulder, and not too noisy.

I have a .223 Dissipator upper for my AR-15 receiver. I've added to my collection a 9mm Oly upper, a 10mm Oly upper and a Ciener .22 conversion. They all shoot very well with no hiccups sometimes associated with caliber swapping. I've never handed the 9mm AR to anyone who didn't return it with the magazine (32 rounds!) completely empty...

It's just plain fun to shoot. Maybe it's just the shock of an AR-15 that has detectable recoil, at least in the case of the 10mm. I'm ferreting my way through the laws to determine if I could register a Short Barreled Rifle and then chop off 4 or 5 inches from the barrel of the 9mm upper to make a neat little (albeit semi-auto) AR-based Subbie...
