Sorry for such a general question, but I'm trying to get back into shooting again after an almost two-year-logn hiatus (due to starting grad school).

Can anyone recommend a Concealed Handgun License course provider in the triangle (Raliegh, Cary, Durham, RTP, etc) area of North Carolina? What is the usual cost and time commitment for such a course? As I understand, I need to take a course, get a certificate or something, then take that to my sherrif to get a permit, right?

Also, any recommendations on shooting ranges? I've tried the Durham County Wildlife Club. but they have rather annoying volunteer requirements (I spent more time weeding the trails than I did shooting...) and they have no rifle range. I'd like a good pistol range and a good rifle range at least 100 years long.

Many thanks

As for the CCW course, I've not yet taken mine, but I've been pointed to Deep River Sporting Clays by others on here. Cost of the course is $60, and as far as I can tell it's a one-day thing; not sure how long, probably most of the day. Personal Defense in Garner also offers the course for $100- see their site for dates. IIRC, they spread the course out over two or three days. PDHSC also has a decent indoor range, and I'm a member there.

As for ranges with 100+ yard rifle positions, there are a couple of options. Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center has 100-yard rifle positions, and offers by-the-hour range charges ($15 for non-Wake residents). Range 1 toward Lillington also has a 100-yard range and has daily fees of $15. If you want longer ranges (300 yards), look into Durham Pistol & Rifle Club or Sir Walter Gun Club. You'll be paying yearly membership dues at either of those.

Good luck and good shooting.
