I was thing about getting in to AR style rifles and was wondering would it be cheaper to build my own rifle or buy one already pre built? I’m just looking for a basic setup no bells and whistles yet.

In california I think you can build a rifle cheaper. Just buy an off list lower and order a kit from a vender like del-ton. I built a rifle from a del-ton kit and it runs great. Go to the cal guns forum and you can get the correct info on building it so the rifle is legal. Mark

First of all, move out of CA (and not to Idaho). Second, and more realistically, build your own. I started building ARs last March and am still going strong. It is a platform that is worthwhile learning, trust me. Once you get started, it is difficult to stop. I was losing sleep waiting for my first order to come in.

RockyMT's link is an excellent page.

I also live in CA and have built 3 ARs (carbine, target model and x39/.22LR).
You will not regret it, and it's not even that hard. Just do some basic research, take your time, and be then proud of your accomplishment.

Someone posted on another board that "if you can use a fork to eat without poking out your eye, you can assemble an AR". Pretty accurate assessment, IMO. I have two kit built guns that run like a champ, both were somewhat less expensive than a similarly equipped factory rifle.
