I have several handguns that get little range time. I'm thinking of selling/trading up to get a high end 1911 like a Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Ed Brown.

The ones I would sell/trade are all solid handguns in their own right. That is what makes the decision tough. Glocks in 9 and 40, Sig P226 in 9mm, Sig P220, Kahr PM9. The Glocks in 40 are the only 40 calibers I own. So, they could be the ones that go.

Thoughts?

I'd ditch the .40 and the P220. I HAVE a P220 but it is relegated to home defense because I have not found a recreational or competitive niche for it where it is actually fun to shoot and it is bulky for carry.

With consideration to ammo, you might want to look at a nice 1911 in .40 caliber to augment your Glocks.

Dump the nines and keep the all of forties, otherwise you'll be buying third caliber of ammo to feed all of your pistols. Just a thought, and simply to confuse the issue.

That is an excellent point. I have the same opinion of the P220 which is why I haven't bought one in spite of all the favorable reviews of the pistol.

I found the Sigs to be left behind when I head to the range or concealed carry. Solid guns. Perhaps both need to go to make room for something that will get used more.

Sounds like a wise move to me. I have done the same thing over time. I bought all the cheap ones started reloading and shot the fire out of them.
After meeting some guys at the range then becoming friends with them and then them letting me shoot their quality guns it made me see the light.

Now......the only guns I have or find any interest in are quality, high end 1911's, out of production Smith revolvers, and old High Standard 22's. Really....target pistols in general.
As far as polymers go....I bought a few but just wasn't proud to own them.

P220 has to go if you go the 1911 route

Ditch the 9mm ... you will have a .40 that is about the same cost of feeding with bigger punch. (don't start caliber wars)

Which Glocks do you have in 9? If it's a 19 or a 26 I'd keep that (or them) and sell everything else. I'm sure you'll love having a high end 1911. I love my Nighthawk.

I've done this. I sold a couple of guns to buy an Ed Brown, and I just sold 4 guns to pay for a Custom Shop Springfield I just ordered a week ago.

This line makes it sounds like this is a world of regret just looking for a specific time to happen.

Unless you are 110% sure you won't have regrets, because for example you flat don't like one or all of the guns in question, I'd just sit tight and save up cash.

Nothing worse than sellers remorse... I have been suffering since I let my old GP100 go. I would agree with the others who said to analyze your choice of ammo. You seem well equipped in the 9mm sector... would you consider a 1911 in (gulp) 9mm instead of the usual 45acp? I like to always limit the number of different calibers in my safe.

I have an STI Trojan in 9mm. It is by far the most accurate handgun I own.

I don't doubt it... many top grade competitive shooters use 1911's in 9mm. I have never tried one, but I assume that using a long steel slide over a steel frame would make the 9mm recoil feel like more of a hand massage.

RE: seller's remorse. I think you could go ahead and sell the Glocks and Sigs to fund your purchase. Unless they have some kind of specific sentimental value, they are just Glocks and Sigs. If you do experience seller's remorse, they will be easily replaced.

I have considered doing the same thing but the guns I have, though not rare, would be harder to replace than a stock Glock or Sig. I'd really like to have a nice higher-end 1911. I don't shoot as much as I'd like so when I go to the range I tend to put less rounds through each of my guns rather than a lot of practice with one gun. I sometimes consider that I'd be better off dedicating myself to a single gun or maybe a couple, but can't bring myself to do it because I'd have to trade/sell too much to get that "one" in return.

Also consider that 1911's are a serious disease. Chances are, when you sell a bunch off to buy a high-end 1911, you might soon be selling the rest for another one!

U got that right!

Knowing what I know now, if I was starting my collection from scratch, my first purchase would be a Les Baer TRS.

But I did not know that when I started. I would also have trouble selling off some of my current guns to fund that purchase.

Its the old quantity vs, quality argument.

If I could only take one gun with me, it would be nice to have the best for a TEOTWAWKI scenario. But in SHTF scenario, I might leave the best in the safe, where it is safe, rather than risk having a $2,000 pistol confiscated in a New Orleans type scenario, or even just an average self defense shooting.

Sell them all and buy a nice 1911 because you'll eventually end up selling them anyway.

and for cheaper shooting, get a Marvel .22 conversion ;)
