Harry Reid has worked to get the "Nuclear Option" reduced to nothing but an inconsequential change or two; leaving the filibuster option completely intact, and removing the threat of 51 votes becoming law in the senate!!!

This would have DEFINITELY been used to push Feinstein's BS through the Senate; now, they'll need every single one of those 60 votes to try and shove through terrible legislation.

This has to be a plus for the pro-gun side, as 51 votes and 60 votes are worlds apart!

Hurrah!

indeed, indeed :D

Now, I"m not politically intelligent enough to know if there are downsides to this overall, but myopically speaking, needing more votes to trample our rights is always going to be a good thing. Also, sticking to the original rules as intended seems like a plus also.

Can someone explain this a little better? The article that i read said that there were some changes to the fillibuster rule, but i was unclear as to what those changes were. I take it from this thread that eliminating the 60 vote requirement was not one of the changes.

Well, the nuclear option, impacts far more than just guns.

And if lil harry had got this through, he knows it would have bitten him and the commiecrats more than it could have ever hurt the pro 2nd people.

I am a Republican. Have been since day one. I have never voted for a Democrat in my life, but I am thinking, and I hope I am not premature on this, that Reid saw the writing on the wall with the Feinstein Ban, and took the nuclear option off the table. All indications are that he's a gun guy. He will be under enormous pressure from Barry and some Dems about the guns. Now I know he can prevent it from reaching a floor vote, but now he may just be able to say that it wasn't brought to the floor because of the lack of votes, so the impression is that it's not his fault. 2014 campaigning is right around the corner. Some of the senate dems are aware of that.

So when does this voting take place on the Feinstein bill?

Never as long as our elected officials do their job.

Fillabuster in the Senate, and the Speaker doesn't have to bring it to a vote in the House.

If congress went away for years wouldn't we all be better off. Of course, if Obama just played golf. We don't need Washington.

Here are a few of thoughts to show that this concern isn't new...

"It could probably be shown in facts and figures that there is no distinctly native American criminal class except Congress." -- Mark Twain

"No man's life, liberty or fortune is safe while our legislature is in session." -- Benjamin Franklin

"If we were left solely to the wordy wit of legislators in Congress for our guidance, uncorrected by the seasoned experience and the effectual complaints of the people, America would not long retain her rank among the nations." -- Henry David Thoreau

"Nothing is more important today than reversing the pernicious rise of a professional political class." -- Doug Bandow, Cato Institute

"Nothing scares members of Congress more than angry freedom-loving Americans." -- Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann

So, I believe legislators being nervous about reelection because they have misstepped is just the system working correctly. It is unfortunate that they can't see it coming and avoid the misstep in the first place... :)

Ok in other words, when will the general public know if its getting thrown out, voted on, or if it passes?

Once the Bill is assigned a number you can keep up with it at http://www.popvox.com. I have been on the road all evening so someone else may already know what the bill number is. You would just search on S(bill number).

You can express your opinion about the pending legislation there too. PopVox is a cool.

I figure the bill will be read once or twice on the Senate floor and then be referred to committee where hopefully it will die a painful death. After seeing how outlandish it is all I've heard on talk radio on my way home tonight was that "it's DoA".

I agree with what a lot of others have said here that this was Harry Reid's way of not having to deal with this abomination of a bill. I'm still waiting to see the text of S2 which is Reid's "Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting Safety Act" or something like that. Last time I checked PopVox there was no text on the bill posted yet.

I don't think for a second though we can let up or drop our guard but I'm pretty sure this one is done.

If I've crossed the line on politics I understand any and all moderators actions with regard to this post.

Say what you will about Sen. Reid, he is intelligent and politically astute. He knows his party is defending 7 more seats than the GOP, at midterm, in a downturned economy, and a change of six would make him MINORITY leader. He knows there is a slim chance of the stick he beats the GOP with today being shoved roughly up his caucus next time around. He's playing nice and being reasonable for a reason.
