Shell carrier preference

I plan on adding a shell carrier to my chest rig for range fun and occasional competitions. Between these two, which shell carrier do you prefer, think you would prefer, or other comments?

Option 1: easy access but large.

Option 2: Smaller, more secure, allows to carry two pouches for a few more rounds, takes longer to access shells.

It could mean nobody uses either one for competition?
(Most likely)

Or it could be, nobody has any experience with either one because nobody uses them.
(Another possibility?)

Myself, am an old shell-bag sort of guy.
Dump a box of 25 shells in a belt bag and gofer it.
But I never won any "occasional competitions" with shotguns lately either.

Years ago, when I did use shell loop vests & belts?
I lost way too many shells in the weeds, and lost way too many shots because the shells fell out somewhere along the way.
And you have to pick them out of the loops One At a Time.
Instead of scooping up a handful at a time out of a bag on the belt.

SO, here is my thoughts:
#1. Looks like the center row of shells would be hard to get out fast with the outside loops in the way.

I have no idea what it opens up to look like, or if the open lid is in the way, or how hard a reload would be to get too?

But what do I know?

Doesn't have to be those exact ones, just something similar.

The second option that holds 12 is similar to the old school alice shell holders. Two rows of elastic.

I prefer a sidesaddle and butt stock shell holders because they are static and unmoving. I plan to get a butt stock holder for my HD shotgun. A bandoleer sling will swing and move around. The bandoleer sling is definitely a better idea if you need much more ammo though.

My old upland vest has flaps over the elastic shell holders and I don't recall losing any shells. I rarely use it anymore.

For duck hunting and trap I have a tough canvas shoulder bag and just dump shells into it.

Our HD gun has a Sidesaddle. I'm not a competitive shotgunner.

Don't know if that helps.

25 round bag for clay games or big time bird hunts,50 round bags for extended combat. You don't need to hold each SG shell in it's own velcro loop, that wastes a lot of space.A few of them for specialty or last ditch rounds ok.A 50 round dump pouch, not that you put in 50 rounds but thaat size on a good riggers belt with suspenders and leg elastic quick release tie down is about optium prime !

What type of competition?

Mostly just competition between friends where we set up a quick course and just see who is the fastest and most accurate. I haven't done an actual 3 gun event in about a year, and even it was pretty relaxed and wasn't that strict on rules. I just moved to Eastern NC and don't know of any 3 gun events out here, but if I find some I'd like to join those as well.

Well, the only competition I've done with a shotgun was cowboy action shooting and for that we used belts like this one. Beyond that I've developed a preference for sling mounted shell holders.

Kurt Miller runs the Choate 6-shell belt carrier. He loads 8 rds in under five seconds.

I think I'll just get some malice clips for my old m-16 alice pouches and use one of those. They let me grab four shells at a time to load up.

Tons of 3-gun in Eastern NC. Tarheel 3-gun, Cross Creek, Ant hill, ZSA, etc. I'd look at the California Competition works shell caddies, or if you are handy, you can make your own out of a piece of kydex.

I use the Choate 6 round belt carriers for 3 gun and they work very well, about $19 each.

I like the Triple K. leather, 6rd. belt slides. They just sit there (unused) but I hate the elastic junky stuff that just sits there,unused. Cabellas has them. They stay tight not like the stretch belts.

M60 SAW pouch. Flap can be folded out of the way. Has elastic "lips" so hand can be plunged in quick, but ammo won't fall out.

I've shot defensive shotgun matches with two Choate 4 round belt carriers. My hands are too small to handle more than 4 at a time and the gun was 4+1 (no extension) so 4 rounds sufficed on that account as well.

Starting with 5 in the gun plus 2 reloads, I had 13 rds. And I confess to also having a cuff on the stock, but yanking single or pairs from elastic loops seemed tedious compared to grabbing a handful with one swipe.
