So I recently picked up a 590A1, which I'm sure you all know by now, because this is my third question about it haha.

The manual says that you should be able to empty the magazine by depressing the shell stop, which should allow each shell to spring out of the tube one by one. At least with my shotgun, that works only about 10% of the time. The shell that comes out usually stops when it hits the front edge of the elevator.

This is with a shell sitting normally in the magazine:

And this is what it looks like after I've manually depressed the shell stop:

Any ideas?

When it's stuck like that, no, the slide does not come all the way out of battery. Otherwise it works fine.

The factory spring might need replacement, I used a wolff spring when mine started to get a little weak on the last shell or two.

The spring doesn't appear to be the problem. I'm having the same problem whether it's the first shell to leave the tube or the last. In fact, when it does come out the way it should after depressing the shell stop, it hits my finger with a good amount of force.

Even with a stiff spring in mine it doesn't manaully unload very smoothly. Maybe not as bad as yours sounds but still not easy.

Actually it seems to work perfectly if I sort of catch the shell as it's coming out. And that way my finger doesn't get crushed between the brass and the front of the trigger group. Problem solved I guess. Still, I posted the problem on the Mossberg forum as well; well see what they have to say.

I think when they say you can unload it that way they are saying you CAN unload it that way. On my 590 I would just PUT THE SAFETY ON rack slide back and dump shell out of ejection port and repete untill your done.
