I found some SW Match Rifle to try in my quest to find a replacement to IMR 4064. Burn rate appears similar, based on SW burn chart. However, data is somewhat rare. Does anyone use this powder in 308 with a Hornady 168 grain Amax, 178 grain ELD, or a Speer 168 grain HPBT Match? The primary data from Shooters World is for the Sierra 168 grain Match King. While they're all similar, I'm not really willing to just substitute bullets, particularly with Hornady bullets. I'd probably try it with the Speer, but only if I can't find data by the end of the weekend.

Not substituting is a real limiting factor when using SWP. Same weight, same construction, starting load and go from there. Or pick a powder that matches what you have. If your uncomfortable experementing and testing then don't. Best of luck

When starting at the starting load of a simular weight and material bullet, I've not had a problem yet. You may see pressure early, but when using the process it should not get out of control. Do a Slattery test so you know where to stop, and get some data while doing it.

I can’t justify the cost of IMR 4064 for what I do. It was the first rifle powder I tried and works well but it’s hard to find and $$$ when I do. I’ve just had trouble with Hornady bullets in 308 in the past and don’t want to repeat it. The Speer is probably close enough I’ll try it. Im still leery of the Hornady.

That’s what happened. I was even using service rifle data and saw pressure well before expected. It didn’t shoot that great either so it wasn’t a big loss to abandon that load.

I would have tried that if they’d had any. Both were on my list to find.
