Shooting From the Bench

I just bought a Savage .308 varmit gun to shoot off the bench from one to five hundred meters. I use a front rest and rear bag and have quickly found out this is not like shooting my .223 from the bench. What position do most folks use for a .308? Do you use the sitting with one hand on the trigger and the stock on the shoulder with the other arm on the bench or bag or what? I see some folks put the left hand on their rifle's forearm but my guess would be that this would affect how the weapon recoils differently each time. I'd appreciated any input on this.

Try using a rear bag and holding the rear bag with your left hand. ps: be sure and wear (1) a shooting jacket with pad for butt, or (2) a heavy sweatshirt.
Also, I put a Pachmayer Decelerator on my 06, and it made it much more pleasent to shoot, still not a .223, but bearable for long range sessions.

And stack those sandbags high, the more upright you sit the better you can absorb the recoil. When zeroing our big bores we always try to get the rifle high enough so that we are sitting up almost straight.

I also use a Past recoil shield whenever I'm shooting 7x57 and up off the bench .
