I see an occassional post where someone says they were out and about plinking in a State/National Forest. I'm wondering how legal this is, especially here in NC.

I have loads of State (Dupont, Gorges) and National Forests (Pisgah, Nantahala) in my area, but I'm fairly certain they're closed to shooting outside of established hunting seasons.

Is it OK to just bop around the woods plinking at pine cones and offensive tree trunks?

EDIT...Gorges is a State PARK, not FOREST. Awesome trout fishing btw.

Outside of hunting season you can only have a .22 long rifle revolver/pistol

This applies to national forest lands INSIDE NC except at shooting ranges

This basically applies to carry on national forests outside of major hunting seasons in north carolina

LAR-15 must be referring to North Carolina Forests. It is completely incorrect when you refer to US Forests.

Unfortunately, out West we have had shooters trashing popular shooting spots, leaving garbage, shot up computer monitors and so on. The District Rangers in the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests have been closing off some of the most popular (and trashiest) shooting spots. Colorado State Forests are also open to shooting sports year round.
