Anyone know where is a good place for some shooting in Barstow?

Target shooting is allowed on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The legal target shooting area is the area north, northwest, or northeast of Barstow, taking into consideration any private land, posted signs, and other rules and regulations that would apply. It is the responsibility of the shooter to know the laws for the area where they are shooting.

I google earthed the area and I saw some roads but I'm not sure where is a great place for some rifle shooting. I also was wondering if anybody knew how strict they are? It says this on their site

Shoot only retrievable, freestanding targets. It is illegal to shoot at trees, bottles, or other objects. Take all used targets with you.

So I can't shoot apples or oranges? I mean I understand the bottle shards might piss them off but would they really care about that? Anybody who has shot in Barstow BLM land let me know!
Thanks!

Most likely BLM restrictions and rules are universal. Lots of abuses regarding trash have occurred in our area which gave them the excuse they were looking for to restrict greatly shooting areas.
Also, check the restrictions relative to fire danger. Our BLM shooting areas in CA are currently closed due to fire danger!

I lived in Santa Monica for about 3 years and in that time, I only made it out to the desert to shoot twice. Ouch. It was about a 6-hour round trip for me. Anyway, I don't remember exactly where it was, I know it was some desolate exit right off of Interstate 15 between Victorville and Barstow. That sure doesn't narrow it down. I took along some empty aluminum cans for target practice and a trash bag to pack out my trash. I seem to remember that although I was miles from any structures in every direction, the sight of abandoned-looking trailer homes on the horizon creeped me out. Plus that part of the desert has a weird "dump-a-body" vibe to it. With every gunshot, I listened for someone to shoot back at me. Well, hope you live a little farther east than I did and you find somewhere good!

I used to go shooting on the west side of Fort Irwin Rd about halfway between Barstow and base back in the mid 90's when I was stationed out there.

As you leave Barstow on the 40 going East, get off at Yermo/Daggett Rd. go right then left and follow the road out as far as you feel like driving. I use to go out there a few times a years to camp and shoot. Do a Google on "Ord Mountain" and it'll pop up.

Changed to a different location as it gave me more room to shoot long distance. BLM Rangers don't like people shooting glass as there are cattle ranches out in the desert in the Barstow area. Also keep an eye out for mines as many people have fallen in and died.
