New to the slug world but I 've got a free place to hunt deer and hogs but HAVE to use slugs. The deer and hogs are definately on the property so I'm getting the fever already.

I've got a Hastings rifled slug barrel on a Rem 870 Wingmaster pump, B-Square scope mount (the bases and rings didn't seem all that impressive) and a decent simmons scope (well, as decent as a simmons can get I guess). I'm shooting Winchester partition gold 2 3/4 285 grain sabot slugs. Just got my complete act together tonight and I'm heading to the range tomorrow. Please help this rookie before he wastes too much time and money!!!!!!!! I'm all ate up...just the thought of smelling gun powder in the morning is giving me the shakes. Here are the questions:

Is it possible to bore sight a slug gun?
What kind of groups should I be getting with above package at 50 yds.?
How about 100 yds.?
Where do I start sighting? 25 yds.? 50 yds.?

HELP!!!!!!

Benelli Nova SP 18.5" smoothbore unchoked barrel.

Remington Reduced Recoil slugs from the prone at 100 yards on a silhouette target. 3 shots to the head, touching. Another five in the chest in a 5 inch group.

Start at 25 yards. One of the collimator bore sighting setups can help, but it's not essential.

Try this for painless zeroing.

Bench the 870 solidly. Fire off one carefully aimed shot. Bed the weapon with sandbags or similar with the crosshairs centered on the bullseye.

Here's the tricky part. Without moving the weapon, bring the crosshairs to the hole left by the first round. A second person helping here is a big plus. Fire off another round or two to check zero and move the target back to 50 yards. Repeat until one is at 100 yards and centered. Check back at 50 to see the trajectory.

4" groups at 100 yards are quite possible, testing a variety of loads may get you well under that.

HTH....

They move pretty slow, plus you can just follow the slimey trail to track them, so I'd say you should perform well. A load of rock salt should work well as it dries them out.

(sorry - the serious answer was already covered).

Two weeks ago at tactical shotgun class I was shooting off hand at 75 yards shooting regular slugs with 18 in cylinder bore barrel with bead front sight. I was shooting 6 in groups with regular non-sabot slugs. I think going prone would have tightened the group up. But, after 125 rounds of bird shot, 75 rounds of buckshot, and 25 slugs I was a tired boy!
