I'm planning on going to the big Star Trek convention in Vegas in August and being from Illinois, one of the first things to pop in to my head when I thought about going to Vegas for anything was SHOOTING.

I know the southwest is something of a Mecca for American shooting and I am planning to do a good amount of browsing/gawking and as much reasonably priced class 3 shooting as I can. Are there any places that I absolutely *must* go to, or should I just go to whereever looks to have the best prices and best selection (I like to support people who not only are nice and knowledgeable, but also support shooters and shooting in general)?

I know there has to be quite a few people here that have passed through Vegas for a multitude of reasons, so I'd be interested to find out where is best to go.

Welcome to Las Vegas

You'll enjoy it. We have a lot of variety available.

There are a number of outdoor ranges, one at Boulder City and another called Desert Sportsmen Rifle & Pistol Club (on Charleston across the 215 on the left as you head towards Red Rock State Park). The Desert Sportsmen has a Wednesday evening Steel Challenge to avoid the heat, and on the weekends there are IDPA, USPSA, Cowby Action Shooting, 3-gun and other events going on regularly.

We also have a County shooting facility being developed that when it is complete will equal or surpass the Ben Avery facility in Arizona. In fact the fomer facility manager at Ben Avery is now the 'guy' here in Las Vegas.

If indoor shooting is your 'thing' (I can't understand that when there are so many good outdoor events), then there are also a number of those places you'd like to visit such as American Shooter Supply, The Gun Store (where you can do your machine gun thing), and several others -- all easily found on the Web.

Have Fun - Be Safe - Make New Friends.

A shop I support (should you need to stock up on supplies) is Bill's Buy & Sell on Fremont. Bill's a retired 0-5 and great to deal with. I believe the outdoor ranges mentioned are members only so you'd have to have someone sponsor you AFAIK. I've taken my shotty to one area known to locals off Las Vegas Blvd where ppl set up skeet shoots or general plinking, or in my case pattern some new rounds. Heard it gets busy at times though I've only been there before sunrise myself and no one was there.
