I see Speer has a "short barrel" product for the 9mm. Couple questions.

Are these products really different? Looking at the ballistics info below, the differences in velocity, energy & trajectory could just be due to the 1/2-inch shorter test barrel.

If they do have a custom, what do you think they are? Does anybody know of any short battle optimized handloads for the 9mm?

Well, it appears to me you posted two links to the same product number & barrel length.
The product code for the short barrel load is #23611
Other then that?

If you handload, whatever powder gives the highest velocity in a long barrel will also give the highest velocity in a short barrel.

There is also the possibility of getting higher velocity then +P factory ammo without P+ pressure.

You just have to peruse your load manuals for the right powder to use to do it.

Not sure about the powders used in standard versus short-barrel factory loads but I understand the major difference in Speers factory is the bullet itself. I think the short-barrel loads have a little more hollow cavity than standard bullets. While the velocity in short barrels is less they compensate with an easier expanding bullet. That's what I think the difference is??

As said above, it's the bullet that makes the big difference in the Speer SB ammo. It is designed to reliable expand at the slower velocities associated with short barrel handguns.
