Shorts, Kurzs, and x17s, oh my. Or, magnumitis is not THAT rampant in the USA.

Wow, a real explosion of new .380s in the last few years. I would have thought the the magnumitus public would have eschewed the lowly mousegun caliber, but not so. I guess packable size (and common sense) trumps magnumitus with the American self-defense minded public.

New Taurus
New Kahr (which I hear actually exist now)
New Sig (Old Colt Mustang rebadged)
etc., etc.

No wonder there's a shortage of .380 ammo...

Yeah, my wife would love to have a P238, but the ammo scarcity alone has caused her to rethink a 9mm. I actually did find a dealer that had a case or so of 380 range ammo, but he wanted $40 per box, so I passed. I don't even have a 380 right now, but if I could start finding enough affordable ammo, I'd go ahead and get her that Sig.

I just think of the .380 as the .32 on steroids. It's a magnum of sorts. Of course I went from a P-32 to a 9mm and skipped the .380 altogether.

When push came to shove, folks picked the smallest caliber that could be easily mastered and carried. Thus the 380 auto. Much to the chagrin of the magnum crowd, most CHL carrier's will never need the gun and when they do need it, a 380 is presumed to be enough. Maybe they are right, maybe wrong, but a 380 on the person beats the 9mm poorly shot and not carried.

Rampant magnumitis

Then there's that kin of mine who can't possibly say enough about the .50 Desert Eagle. He doesn't own one. He claims that it is the standard issue to the USMC. And he can't stop talking about how wonderful, unrivaled, and transcendent that gun is.

The usual progression is buy a boat anchor (large over sized pistol) show it to everybody, put it in a drawer or safe.

Then buy a gun you actually can and will carry (Glock 26, Ruger LCP).

Or just skip the first part.

I just recently went out for a pocket gun. I liked the Sig's looks but it didn't feel great to me. The Taurus just felt like a slightly thicker LCP and the Taurus hasn't had it's recall yet. I handled the Kahr and it felt great but so did the 9mm PM9. I figure that since I had a crap-ton of 9mm and since 380 is expensive/scarce, I would just get the 9mm.

Maybe I have magnumitis. The 9mm is the 380 magnum, right? :neener:

I have been considering buying a 380 as well. If the price for 380 ammunition does not come down sometime soon I may have to consider a different caliber for a pocket gun.

I went with a PF-9 instead of a .380, although I've heard some people argue that the short barrel turns the 9mm into a .380 equivalent..... true or not, 9mm is easier to find.

I also OWB carry a full blown USP45 Tactical, complete with UTL, and don't find it to be uncomfortable. It is more of a pain in the summer time, I'll admit, but... hey, that's what the PF-9 is for.

I still want a .380, but just so I can use the ammo if/when it's available. Probably going with a CZ 82, or maybe even one of those 19 round Taurus .380s, if they actually work right. Not like I need to CCW it. :D

Bullet technology has also helped the .380 and 9mm. I don't think the .380 is anything fantastic, but I carry one every day just because it's simply always in my pocket (except at work and where it's against the law of course). When I find something in 9mm that's as small, thin and light as my LCP, works reliably, allows me to get quick enough follow up shots, and costs $600 or less, I'll switch to that. Until then I'll keep my LCP in my pocket. On my belt I don't mind a bigger gun...such as a 5" 1911 in an IWB or pancake holster. In my pocket, small is key.
