And people I do mean cheap lodging for the ultimate Vegas Gun Culture gathering..
any pointers?
Thanks all, I've managed a tagalong FFL deal and havn't done SHOT since NaOrleans!
 
We were at the CES a couple of weeks ago & had a room at the Westward Ho (down near the convention center). There is a reason that they don't show any exterior views of the hotel on their website ;) . It is a place that looks like it was one of the original hotels on the strip, exterior entrances to all the rooms. To be fair, the rooms were clean & the hotel had security checking all cars heading into the parking area near the rooms to make sure that you belonged there. Not a place that I would stay at again (given all the other choices there in town), however for the money it wasn't that bad (if you aren't expecting Belagio amenities).

Weekday rates at the off-strip hotels can be very cheap. I also went to CES and I stayed at the Las Vegas Club downtown Wednesday for $25. Rooms weren't that bad, not up to the newer strip locations, but definitely livable.

The Circus Circus used to have good rates, and if they were full, they would find you another hotel for the same price. You might want to give that a try.
There are tons of hotels in Las Vegas, the problem is, how close to the Convention Center do you want to be ? Obviously if you are off the strip it will be cheaper. For example, call the Station Casinos. This is where the locals hang out: Palace Station, Boulder Station, Sunset Station, Texas Station.
There is a Motel Six at Koval and Tropicana.
Super Eight at Tropicana and Industrial Road.
You might want to call Arizona Charlies. My parents stayed there once and said it was nice enough (again, not the Bellagio).
How about the Silverton ?
How about the Rio and the Gold Coast ?

If you stay off the strip, you can just drive to a strip hotel, walk through the casino to the front and have a cab take you to the convention center.
 
What's the parking situation like at the convention center? I'll be driving a mini-van up from San Diego and staying in an off-strip motel.
 
I stayed at the Luxor this past summer. Cost me $100 a night or so (triple occupancy), before my military discount.

Unfortuantely, my next day there was both a weekend AND the 4th of July, so that rate doubled....

Stay on a Monday or a Tuesday if you want lower rates. Luxor's really nice.
 
You are darn late to be looking now. Most of the better places are long sold out.

The best way to do the show is to get a hotel in walking distance. The price difference is easily made up in parking and cab fares.

Parking at the show sucks. Not only is it somewhat limited, but you will still end up walking the equivilant of (at least) two long blocks. You should also expect waits of at least one half hour up to over one hour to exit the lot after the show closes. The wait for shuttles is usually one hour, and for cabs it's worse.
 
Have you searched here: www.shotshow.com? Look on the left side for a black bar that says "Hotel Reservations."

I found a few places for $50/night.

Remember to ask for AAA or other discounts.

Or maybe try your luck at Priceline or one of the other online discounters.
 
Lucky Lady still had rooms pretty cheap. Problem is that they are off the beaten path and not on the bus route. Like the previous poster said - you are a bit late.

I haven't been to the SHOT show before, but I've been to Comdex for several years in a row which is also held at the convention center. If it's anything like Comdex, you pretty much will want to walk from your hotel to the convention center, or take a bus/taxi, because the parking in the center is blocked off to everyone except vendors and show exhibitors. I know they have parking lots a block away from the convention center for $5-$10 a day.

I usually stay at Circus Circus when I go to Comdex because it's closer to the Convention Center and the rooms are the cheapest compared to any other Hotel+Casino (my employer doesn't pay for me to go to Comdex). Circus Circus to the convention center is about a 15-20 min brisk walk.
 
ocabj: Thanks for the tips. I still haven't decided where I'm staying, or if I'll just cruise off-strip for a place when I arrive. $5-10 bucks a day parking near the center is probably the way to go. I have large suitcase on wheels for dragging my books etc.

If you have a car (your own or rental) try the Fiesta Henderson. Rooms under $ 30.00, just a few years old (it was the Reserve before Station Casinos took over). Access to the convention center via Boulder Highway (you'll experience the Las Vegas Syndrome - every time you approach a traffic light, it turns red, and now you have all the time to perform an oil change) or I 215 and I 15 directly into the heart of the strip.

The Motel 6 on Flamingo (I believe) has rates cheap enough for even me! The rooms are clean and have parking right outside the door.
