About a month ago, I picked up an old Lee Loader at a gun show for $10. Another $56 got me the Lee reloading book, case lube, a pound of powder, 200 primers and 100 Remington 55gr SP bullets. Along the way I picked up a Lee Safety Scale from dagger_dog who very graciously gave me a few V-max bullets to try.

Today, FINALLY, I was able to avoid the rain and family events and get to the farm to let them loose through my Ruger No.1-V in 22-250 with a fairly inexpensive Tasco 6-18x40 AO scope. While the SP loads left much to be desired, others were much more agreeable to me.

4 shots of 55gr V-Max over 37.0 grains of Win 760. The first three shots were 7/16", the last shot was a flyer stretching the group out to 1 3/16".

The control...factory Rem/UMC 45gr JHP. 1.75" group.

Certainly not as tight as many on here have achieved, but considering I've only shot this rifle maybe 12 times in the last 18 months, my rest was less than ideal, and I was shooting my very first reloads from a dead-blow hammer, I'm happy. And I'm hooked!:D

good job, my first reloads out did factory ammo as well.

I have two big toys coming in Monday, get ready to spend money, if truely addicted!

Yeah, I finally got to shoot my first reloads yesterday, too. 38spl 140gr Hornady cowboy lead bullets. 38 were 3.2gr of W231-they shot fine. The remaining 60 were 3.5gr of W231-they were exceptional. Accuracy was better then I'd hoped and were alot more consistent then factory ammo. They other two I had were not working in the gun-primers not seated in far enough. Oh well, live and learn. Good day all around.

I can sense the excitement from your post. The good news is the groups look pretty good for you first try. The bad news is you are going to learn the basic lesson of reloading......you don't save money. You will quickly spend your way to better groups:D

Trust thy self, O wise one. Nice groups. Keep fine tuning. Reloading out of necessity, also leads to better accuracy for a specific gun. Always look at the charge. It is a great endeavor. Stores closed, no problem. Home made grade isn't bad at all.

I'll second that..

That is how I sold reloading to the wife "ohh it's ok, I'll save all this money"

Ya.. you just shoot more :)

Boiler,

Sounds like you did ok, that Ruger
1V is a nice rifle, now you can start, getting the bullet seating depth where your rifle shots the best, then it will probably shoot that same Remington bullet as accurate as those VMaxs, then you can start finding what powder shoots the best and on and on and, well you get the picture.

Give me a holler and we'll get together and shoot out at the Knob Creek range.
