It occurred to me, that "Shotgun News" has very little on shotguns.

There are popular magazines on Hunting big game, and mags on handguns, combat weapons, and so forth; but there are no magazines on shotguns on the shelf. At least, I haven't seen them.

So I'm wondering, if the shotgun is so simple, that it is not possible to market mags about them, and that hunting small game is so common, that a magazine article showing half a dozen cottontails, or some doves is superfluous.

I guess that's just the way it is.

Also, I suspect that many are drawn to shotguns as a Home Defense weapon, and they proceed to "trick it out" only to find that the thing just sits at home.

When I got my 12 guage, I thought about adding the WhizBang stuff, but when it came to buy, I just bought an ordinary sporting model. I've never regretted that. Full 28" barrel, it is a dual purpose weapon. The prospect of hunting with the shotgun, is far more exciting than the prospect of going fishing. (It's true!)

Not only that, I think Shotgun Sports are more diverse and more varied. There's a lot of stuff you can do with a shotgun. [I don't know what, but other people know that stuff!:neener:]

Take the Reloading aspect for example, and the option to PATTERN your shotgun. Shotgunning may be simple, but it doesn't mean it is entirely simplistic. There are aspects of shotgunning that are fairly sophisticated.

I notice that some shooters use light loads with great accuracy, and I realize that I'm not there yet; but the idea that a shotgun permits both immediate satisfaction, with lots of room for future refinement, has a certain appeal for the new owner.

What say you? :)

I used to get many, but have now limited myself to "Shooting Sportsman". While most guns in there are above my wallet's abilities, I enjoy the articles and high-quality pictures.

JMO, YMMV

I agree with the idea that there is NOT a decent shotgunners magazine that is interesting to me. I don't have the wealth to shoot the multi-thousand dollar guns, nor do I hunt large game. I own a dozen or so shotguns, but they are run of the mill working man's shotguns costing only up to about $1000. I use cheap ammo. I like to hunt small game when possible and substitute trap or skeet when it is not possible. I figure the magazine guys feel there isn't a real reason to invest in advertising to such a cheapskate as me :) I do however see the occasional decent articles on trap, squirrel hunting, rabbit kilin', and basic shotguns. They just don't ever seem to appear in the same magazine. That fact limits my interests in a subscription to any magazine. I pick up something that interests me in the grocery store magazine rack once in a while.

That all being said...

The best shotgunners magazine for me is right here on THR. I get to read about "Dave and the the geezer squad" about once a week or so. I get to see the younger crowd fret over what is best to get started. I get to see us in the middle argue over brand and quality (reminds me of Ford vs Chevy arguments). Most every week I learn something new in a minor detail about some brand. What I am saying is that all of it makes for a great magazine and sometimes comes with some great pictures. The writers at THR are of all ages, religions, creeds, and stuborness. I just take the writings as opinions in the beginning and try not to get too excited when I don't agree. What I see here is just as good or better than I see in magazines or newspapers.

Enjoy!

I like rat cheer too, but I admit I may be biased....

Magazines I enjoy include.....

Upland Journal, a quarterly about upland hunting with shotguns. There's also articles about older shotguns like the Remington 1900.

Shooting Sportsman. The glossy look and pics are nice. The writing, especially McIntosh, is top grade.

Shotgun Sports. Started as a trap newsletter, it has expanded and has a lot of good input.
