Should I get Hogue grips for my 686 SSR or ..

I have 686 SSR with those nice looking gray laminate grips. I was shooting target loads at 700fps and it worked well.

Now I tried some 357 magnum loads and this thing kicks. So, I'm wondering if Hogue grips like those will help?

Part that kicks is top back of the handle (exposed frame) hits between thumb and trigger finger. This hogue style grip doesn't cover this area either.

Shooting those 357 mag feels almost like bell rings inside my head I need to practice but wonder if those grips really going to help..

The rubber itself might tame some of the recoil, but, so long as they fit you hand, rubber grips that cover the backstrap do better. Check out Hogue's Model 500 "Impact Absorbing" grip or, if you want to stand out, their Tamer grip.

Pachmayr grips also cover the backstrap.

Not sure I want to "stand out" in a range, but since I'm planning to hunt with a gun - those orange grips look perfect. Will post an update when I get them..

Just throwing this out there. Mr. Borland touched on this. I like nice wood grips and there are a ton to choose from if you Google it.

It isn't necessarily the rubber material that is a huge benefit with a revolver, it's getting a grip that fits your hand. The area you described, right at the web of your thumb, is the same area I had trouble with. I needed a larger grip to fill my hand properly and increase the trigger reach to ensure a good trigger press.

I found Nill grips with an enclosed blackstrap to be the ticket on both my 686's. They aren't cheap though and may be fancier than you want on a hunting gun.

Well, those orange grips after shipping + tax not that cheap either, like $55. So, I hold on to ordering them.

I like color, if I for some reason drop a gun in a woods (can't imagine why, but..) - will be easier to locate.

I really like Pachmayr Gripper Grips. I have a set on my M686 and they are very comfortable to shoot with.

I ended up getting this exact grip in black (orange on backorder and sales person told me they may never get them)

Anyway, I'm happy to say that recoil problem solved and I can shoot 357 all day long with no problem...

I too have an SSR and have gone through quite a bit of different grips. The Hogues aren't bad, but as others have said you will get the most comfort from a grip that encloses the back of the frame. I have a Pachmayr Gripper on it right now, which does enclose the rear of the frame. It's decent but it could be a little softer. I'm on the lookout for a Pachmayr Decelerator to try out. It's basically their Gripper model but made from a softer compound.
