A woman was in the GS today needing a shoulder holster.

She is a little big so she will need something to accomodate that.

I gave her the THR web-address so she could ask herself but in case she does not stop by AND I see her again I would like to be able to make a suggestion.

Thanks,

The choice of holsters depends on the person , their size and shape . If it doesn't fit use something else. I first gave some thought to womens needs when I saw a female detective with a high rise holster. Because of a woman's shorter torso that put the grip up under her armpit .I wonder how she drew it !!Whether it be a well endowed women or a man with barrel chest and short arms a shoulder holster may not be a good choice. On the forum www.stoppingpower.net there is a section for women shooters ,that's a good place for info.

FIST has a specific line for ladies, if I remember correctly has something to do with how they are laid out in the chest and hips and accomodating for the differences.

Not sure if this help a larger woman (not sure what you mean by large) but it's a possible alternative.

I've purchased direct from these guys, takes a few weeks because they make to order but the quality was good, prices seemed fair.

A shoulder holster would be the worst posssible choice for a large size woman.

As to her size I did not measure her, but she pointed out that she is big and, well, she is.

She said she wants a SH because she does a lot of hiking.

That is all the info I have on the matter.

Thanks for the replies.

It's the website for Cunningham Custom Leather, and it has absolutely the best articles I've ever seen online about how to choose a holster to fit a woman's body. While the articles are written with the idea of selling a holster to the reader, the information in them is clear, accurate, and well-presented -- and will be useful no matter which holster-maker she eventually decides upon.

If yesterday's customer doesn't need the info, tomorrow's customer probably will.

As for the rest, I can only echo what everyone else has already said: shoulder holsters are great for people who aren't well-endowed. They simply don't work well for people who are. (If she's really adamant about wanting a shoulder holster, you might want to steer her towards a vertical rather than horizontal design, as the vertical ones conceal a bit more easily. Also, be sure to show her how to draw without crossing her own brachial artery, by raising the left arm well out of the way while drawing.)

For hiking, she may want to consider a fanny pack. I very vaguely remember someone on THR posting about a fanny pack holster designed to be clipped to the belt of an ordinary backpack ... anyone? anyone? ...

Hope some of that helps.

Nearly every woman I've interviewed says finding a suitable holster falls somewhere between challenging and impossible. -- Gila Hayes

Pax, that is a great site.

The speedloader scabbard is fantastic. Not that I carry a revolver but if I did I would certainly try out that product.

Thanks.
