I spend most of the day seated, so I tend to prefer shoulder holsters. Being a smaller guy doesn't help - a hip holster occupies 20-30% of the real estate on my back when sitting down, so I end up sitting in a twisted position to be comfortable.
Thus, shoulder holsters work best for me. The Ken Null SMZ, Bianchi X15, and Galco Miami Classic work great. You can get a used X15 off Ebay for practically nothing and try it out.
Horizontal carry works great for short guns, and requires no tie downs. Vertical carry works better for long guns, generally requires tie downs.
