Anybody have Sierra 6th edition and can give me the book data for the 124 V-crown 9mm (#9924)? Looking for BE-86, Power Pistol and True Blue specifically. 5th edition doesn't have this bullet.
max load for Trueblue and mid range loads for the others.
Although this is published data (Sierra app is $4.99/ye and worth every penny) use caution, start low and work up.
Single orange asterisk is start, double red is max.
Tried putting them all in one post but my brain wasn't cooperative.
All good. Those are well below their loads for the old 125 JHP in the 5th ed. I have so glad I asked. I never assume that one JHP data can go over to another they're all different.
Truly. I really like the app but I mostly use it for cross-reference and a mobile manual that I can check when I'm out somewhere. There are a few things that are erroneous but overall it's well worth 5 bucks a year.
I finally got my hands on some 124 gold dots to compare with these V-crowns. They are within a few thousandths of overall length. The ogive shape is different and the gold dots have a .025 deep dish in the bottom.
That being the case why is speer's data for the gold dot indicating much higher charges than sierras? For example, Speer calls for 6.0 Max of BE86 where Sierra says 5.1. Noting that the OAL stated is 1.120 vs. 1.090 respectively, does the .030 of depth in the case and the dish on the Speer bullet combine to make that much of a difference or is Sierra just really softballing their data?
Sierra shows up to 5.3gr BE-86 at 1200fps with the #9924 124gr V-crowns in the 9mm +P data.
That's maxed out, but doesn't sound soft to me.
Hornady data shows a 124gr xtp with 5.2gr of BE-86 @ 1100 as their max load with a OAL of 1.060
Makes that 6.0gr with Gold Dots seem on the high side.
I got 1113 from a 5in barrel at 5.1 so I guess that's reasonable correlation.
I also noted that anything less than 5 grains I was getting a dirty burn and high SD. So seems like at 5.1 she's just getting on plane.
I'll make some more and also some gold dots and see how they fly. I'm still learning how seat depth and subtle bullet differences change things, but boy it's a head scratch when Speers starting load is higher than Sierra +P max.
I'd sure rather use the v-crown as practice SD ammo since they're much cheaper and more available.
