I was at a local gun shop a couple of days ago and saw a pretty worn out sig P220 on the shelf. I asked to look at it. This Sig had night sights, which seem to be a little old, the finish was nearly gone, and there was some scrape marks near the butt of the pistol that showed signs that the pistol had been dropped(on pavement) at one point. The price on the tag was $499. I do not know that much about sigs, I have never really been a fan, but i have also never owned one. I have read posts and threads from several folks on here that have sigs , and the general theme is that they are excellent firearms.

My question is would this sig 220 be worth $499 ? I dont have picture of it, but it seems to be in good working order, just the exterior finish is gone.
I do remember reading about earlier sigs having a sheet metal slide. This Sig does have the sheet metal slide, not the milled one. Does the sheet metal slide have any issues that any of you are aware of ? Is the sheet metal slide better or worse than the milled slide ?

I appreciate the help .

no problems that I have ever heard on the slide...
great pistols even if used, easy to repair and bring back to life, BUT.....500 plus tax for that particular one? hmmmmm maybe spend a little more for a "better-treated" speciman....on the other hand, if money is tight, and he will give you a 24 hour guarantee, take it out and shoot a couple boxes of a couple brands of ammo, and you will know if it's a keeper....only takes a couple hours...

The older P220 seem to have a great reputation. The "one" I got to shoot was acurate and the owner said "no prob lems" what so ever.
I now have a P226 and really like the way it handles and points

Now, that seems really high for one in that condition. I just saw on at a local shop that is known for high prices. That one matches your description except the finish was still in great shape and they where asking $500.

Sig 220

That's high for beat SIG. Go to Summit Gunbroker online and look at Mark's Sigs; CPOs and Police trade-ins. He's a reputable guy and won't sell you a POS. I've bought several from him. It's been good. If you can live with a single stack, the West German P220 police trade-ins are a real good deal.

I too think that's to high. If it was a West German with little usage, and just a worn finish . . . . maybe. . . . maybe not.

I bought a LNIB P-220 (US version) about 18 months ago for $436.00 plus shipping and FFL fees (still under $500.00), off Gunbroker.

There are deals out there. If it doesn't feel right, move on, or you can make an "out-the-door" offer.

Thank You for all of your responses.
I went back down to the gun shop and looked at it again. They offered it to me for $425 with no magaiznes. I told them no thanks. I am glad I said no , I booked it at 60-70% and it was only worth $300-$350. I really like it though, never thought a sig would grow on me like that.
Thanks again for everyone's help

I carry the P-220 for duty. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $$ on a brand new one. This way you will be certain of it's history. Just my two cents. I know it's a bit more expensive this way, but the one you described threw up too many "red flags" for me.

When I started I was issued a 13 y/o P-220 with bluing problems, and it was kind of beat. It still shot well, but then I was issued my brand new one (about a year ago). The finish seems a bit more durable and it now has night sights and a rail as well.

If you are insisting on a used one due to cost......do your homework. There are lots of nice ones out there "lightly used".

Great gun but that price is to high.
If in good shape that would be fair.

Too High!!... Look for a Sig CPO (Certified Previously Owned)... like 'new', about $550... comes with one-year Sig Warranty.
Go to Sig Forum Classifieds or SUMMIT GUN (ask for Mark), he can get you one... have bought several guns from him, good man to deal with!
